Support CSDE Trainees

Since 1947 the Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology has provided exemplary interdisciplinary training in demography for graduate students at the University of Washington. The sharp decrease in public funding for higher education means that CSDE Trainees need your support now more than ever. Your gift to CSDE contributes immeasurably to the Center’s training mission and our ability to prepare Trainees for promising careers. Please help us continue our tradition of excellence by giving to the CSDE Graduate Student Travel Fund. Gifts provide support for Trainees to attend the Population Association of America Annual Meetings.

You can make a tax-deductible gift online via the UW Foundation's secure website by clicking here, or by calling toll-free 1-877-894-4387.

CSDE's Expanded Trainee Program
Over the years CSDE has had a very large number of outstanding applications for funded traineeships, but we have been able to fund only about 10% of applicants. In recent years, CSDE has been able to support only six graduate students, four supported by our NICHD population research training grant and two with support from the UW Shanahan Endowment.

The large volume of applications indicates that there is a consistent and high interest among UW graduate students to pursue a specialization in the interdisciplinary field of demography. In 2008-2009 CSDE responded to this interest by initiating an expanded graduate training program that includes both funded and unfunded trainees. We are pleased to report that the expanded program has been very successful. In each year since beginning the program we have accepted approximately 20 highly capable and motivated CSDE Trainees.

In addition to receiving advanced disciplinary and interdisciplinary training in demography, CSDE Trainees are recognized as members of the CSDE intellectual community. And upon completion of their doctoral degree, they receive a letter of recognition from the CSDE Director. All CSDE Trainees are also eligible for partial support to attend the annual meeting of the Population Association of America.
