How to Become a CSDE Affiliate

Thank you for your interest in the Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology. CSDE is an interdisciplinary center for demographic research, with affiliates from a wide range of fields. Our external funding for research infrastructure comes from NICHD and so does some of our training support, with a mandate to provide support to, and encourage innovation in, demographic research and training.

To become an affiliate, a faculty member must submit an application statement, their NIH biosketch, and letters of nomination from two current CSDE affiliates. Applications are reviewed by the CSDE Executive Committee once a year during spring quarter. Following a positive vote by the Executive Committee, a letter of invitation is sent to the nominee by the CSDE Director. The applicant’s statement and nomination letters should address the applicant’s qualifications for affiliate status, as defined below.

Affiliates are expected to have an active program of scholarly research in the field of population studies (peer-reviewed publications, externally-funded research grants) and to contribute to the demography research community at the University of Washington and our regional affiliate institutions. We tend to interpret the population studies mandate broadly, but areas of research that would be appropriate for presentation at the Population Association of America or publication in the journal Demography provide a useful guide.

CSDE membership provides various benefits, including:

  • The use of core CSDE services, including grants management support, some human resources and payroll support, computing resources and support, statistical consultations, assay services for biodemographic research, reference and translational support, and geo-spatial resources and support.
  • Possible funding from CSDE’s small grants program to support new research initiatives.
  • The availability of highly motivated CSDE Trainees to assist on research projects.
  • The CSDE staff and faculty run courses and workshops to train graduate students. These courses and workshops are open to your students and provide a critical training ground and resource for your research assistants.
  • The opportunity to engage in an active, interdisciplinary scholarly community. A critical role of CSDE is to foster the fruitful cross-disciplinary exchange of ideas, and to promote interdisciplinary research collaborations.

In return for the receipt of these benefits, CSDE expects affiliates to fulfill the following obligations.

  • Present at the CSDE seminar in the first year as an affiliate, if possible, and thereafter as your interests and schedule permits.
  • Regularly attend CSDE seminars (e.g., at least one-third of the seminars each year, and preferably more) and other CSDE events such as brown bags and special occasions.
  • Participate in the training program, including mentoring trainees on research projects, providing an annual academic progress report for trainees you are mentoring, recommending trainees for CSDE and other pertinent funding opportunities, and encouraging students to participate in CSDE events and courses, as well as encouraging their participation in national and international population research communities.
  • Contribute fully to the NICHD Center Grant and Training Grant renewal process and the production of required annual reports. We expect affiliates to respond to all requests for biographical information, information on publications and grants, etc., that are needed to maintain CSDE’s funding.
  • Acknowledge CSDE support on publications, conference papers, and posters that used core services in anyway or included work with a CSDE trainee. The text of that acknowledgment should be:
Partial support for this research came from a Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development research infrastructure grant, 5R24HD042828, to the Center for Studies in Demography & Ecology at the University of Washington

    OR

Partial support for this research came from a Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development training grant, 5T32HD007543, to the Center for Studies in Demography & Ecology at the University of Washington
Also, please include the pertinent (or both if appropriate) CSDE grant number when you deposit manuscripts in PubMed Central for your NIH grant. You can easily list multiple grants when you deposit manuscripts in the NIH manuscript submission system. Indeed, it is requested that you list all NIH funding that supported the manuscript. Here's how:
    1. After you enter your grant information, check the Select box
    2. Enter either the CSDE R24 or T32 grant number in the Grants/Projects search box
    3. When prompted for the the PI, Mark Ellis is the R24 PI; Charles Hirschman is the T32 PI
Should you need further instructions, here's a link to a very short tutorial on adding grants in the NIH manuscript submission system. Please contact David Hyllegard, CSDE Information Core Director, if you have any questions or require aassistance.

  • We strongly encourage affiliates within the College of Arts and Sciences to have their external grants administered by CSDE, since this results in indirect cost returns to both the center and your appointing department. Our continued core funding from the NICHD also depends on affiliates’ successful extramural grants, especially from NIH or NSF, because this is a strong indication of the productive returns on infrastructure investment from the NICHD. Extensive use of specific resources, such as statistical and programming support, and project-specific computing are typically handled through sub-budgets from an affiliate's research grant.

Near the end of each five-year funding cycle (currently June 2012), affiliates can reapply for continued status by submitting the research and funding materials required for the center grant proposal.
