Advanced Research Methodology Workshop

Advanced Research Methodology Workshop (On-Site)

An annual 2 week short course in Nairobi will be held on topics requested by local population scientists. Initial discussions have identified several topics of interest: multi-level modeling, longitudinal data analysis, network analysis and simulation methods for demography and HIV transmission modeling. We will partner with the Population Council, and the APHRC to develop courses and make them accessible to the broader community of population scientists in the Nairobi area. Once the courses are well established, and can be taught locally, we hope they will form the core of an advanced methods workshop that can be offered for a fee as a regional training resource. This will make it possible for the training to become self-sustaining after this grant ends.

The next course will be held August 2011.

Faculty

Steve Goodreau, PhD (methodologist)
Dr. Goodreau is a biological anthropologist whose research focuses on models for the population dynamics of HIV spread. He has been a key member of the UW social networks modeling group since its inception, and has worked on all stages of development of the statnet program and the class of models which underlies it. He has led tutorials on the program and its applications at the Sunbelt Social Networks Conference, the Stanford Short Course in Demography, and the University of Melbourne. Dr. Goodreau has worked in applying mathematical modeling to the study of HIV transmission among men who have sex with men in Peru and the US, and to the study of adolescent friendship networks.

Susan Cassels, PhD (methodologist)
Dr. Cassels is a demographer with a strong quantitative background in addition to her training in social sciences. She has a B.S. in mathematics and a Ph.D. in demography, including courses in formal demographic methods and simulation models. Over the past three years Dr. Cassels has built and used mathematical simulation models for research projects addressing issues of migration and STD transmission, the impact of disease on fertility and mortality, and HIV transmission dynamics. Drs. Cassels, Clark, and Morris are in the process of completing a comprehensive review paper on mathematical models of HIV transmission dynamics with a strong emphasis on the importance of both behavioral and biological components.

Martina Morris

Anita Rocha
Anita Rocha, a consulting statistician for the Center for Studies in Demography & Ecology at the University of Washington, most recently comes from Harborview Medical Center where she was the Biostatistician for the Quality Improvement Department. She's worked at the Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center, Microsoft, and several companies involved in the pharmaceutical industry. Data forecasting, survival analysis and regression are a few of her favorite analysis areas. Moreover, she has a range of experiences with different programming languages and data management. For example, Anita has earned certification in SAS.

 Annual Advanced Research Methodology Workshop

August 2011

KeFA will host the first annual Advanced Research Methodology Workshop to be held at the University of Nairobi’s Chiromo Campus from August 11th – 22nd 2008. This annual workshop provides training in advanced research methods needed for interdisciplinary research on HIV prevention. The aim is to strengthen the capacity of the participants to undertake high quality interdisciplinary research and to enhance their analytical skills. The format is an intensive 2 week workshop with a combination of lecture and hands-on data analysis. The training is intended for faculty and advanced postdoctoral level researchers, and will be taught by a team of faculty from the University of Washington and the University of Nairobi.

In August 2008, the courses offered was:

  • Statistics Refresher Course (1 day required for next 2 courses) August 11
  • Event History and Survival Analysis (1 week, morning session) August 12 - 16
  • Epidemic Modeling and Simulation (2 weeks, afternoon session) August 12-22
  • Qualitative Data Analysis with Atlas.ti (1 week, morning session) August 18 - 22

Participants will develop a solid grounding in theory and the ability to implement analyses on their own data sets. Training materials will be shared with participants with the goal of establishing a core of local faculty who can teach these methods to University students and other researchers in the region. Participants can choose to attend one or more of the courses. The Statistics Refresher course is required for those taking Event History or Epidemic Modeling.

Eligibility

The applicants must be:

  • faculty or postdoctoral researchers working with units affiliated with the KeFA project including the UoN, African Population Health Research Center and Population Council.
  • committed to HIV prevention research
  • willing to participate in the full set of sessions for the course(s) selected

Costs of participation: The workshop is free. Training and writing materials and morning/ afternoon teas will be provided.

Application

Applications must include:

  1. a cover letter stating which courses you are interested in participating in, your current research interests, and what you hope to learn
  2. your current CV with qualifications and contact information (email address required)
  3. a list of statistical, modeling or qualitative analysis courses you have taken, and software programs you have used
