ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM THE DIRECTOR
Please Join Us at the CSDE Retreat on May 2 -- Send your RSVP Today
To the CSDE community: Please set aside the afternoon of Friday, May 2 for CSDE’s spring meeting/retreat.
Lunch will be served in HUB 209AB from 12:00 to 1:30. The new Dean of Arts and Sciences, Ana Mari Cauce, will be joining us for a celebration and review of the events and accomplishments of the past year.
We will continue next door at the UW Club from 1:30 to 5:00 pm with a series of panel and group discussions of 1). CSDE in 2012—developing the population research center of the future, and 2). Research directions and funding opportunities in population science. A more detailed program is forthcoming.
So that we have a count for lunch, would you please send your RSVP today. The RSVP link in here.

Another Banner Year at PAA for CSDE
As usual, CSDE was very well represented at last week's annual PAA conference in New Orleans. We had 33 presenters and/or discussants who participated in 47 sessions--reflecting the wide-ranging expertise of our students and affiliates.
Many thanks to Becky Pettitt for organizing the UW dinner at the Crescent City Brewhouse. About 40 faculty, students, staff and alums shared good food, a warm evening breeze and a great time. Mark your calendars for next year's dinner on Thursday night at the PAA in Detroit.
Thanks also to Josh Patrick for arranging and hosting the CSDE table at the Alumni Night Party, and for giving UW an often-requested
presence at this (noisy) event.

Congratulations to David Nolin on Post Doc Award
David Nolin, finishing up his PhD in Biocultural Anthropology, has been
awarded an NICHD postdoctoral research fellowship from the Carolina
Population Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
David will be using family reconstitution methods from historical demography to reconstruct
genealogies from a century's worth of church records from my field site of Lamalera, Indonesia. Using the resulting dataset he will
be testing evolutionary hypotheses about human reproductive strategies. David's postdoctoral advisor on this project will be
anthropologist Paul Leslie, a specialist on
the demography of East African pastoralists. The postdoc starts next fall and is for two years.

Release Date: April 18, 2008
Opening Date: April 20, 2008
Closing Date: May 20, 2008
