The Healthy Immigrant Effect: Pilot Studies Examining Pre- and Post-Migration Health Status among Filipino Immigrants

Time: 12:30 pm on 10.30.2009
Location: Savery 409

The Healthy Immigrant Effect hypothesizes that immigrants are healthier than their U.S. born counterparts, but their health status declines over time. Research investigating this issue has largely utilized cross-sectional data. A key step in further examining the Healthy Immigrant Effect would entail a longitudinal study that includes pre-migration assessment of health status. This seminar will discuss current efforts and methodologies to conduct pilot longitudinal studies tracking immigrants from the Philippines starting from a pre-migration baseline and after arrival in the U.S. The overarching goal of these projects is to assess the feasibility of conducting a transnational longitudinal study examining the impact of migration-related stressors on health.
