Research on adolescent condom use by affiliate Katherine Stovel and
colleagues, appearing this month in AJPH, draws wide public interest
A study to be reported in the American Journal of Public Health in June 2007, with its dual message that condom use does not lead to promiscuity, but does lower rates of STDs among teens, has already caught the attention of local and national media as well as many health-related websites. Katherine Stovel, Tareneh Shafii (lead author) and King Holmes studied over 4,000 adolescents for a period of six to eight years. Their findings show that teens who used condoms upon initiating sex had about the same number of sexual partners as teens who did not, and they were half as likely to acquire a sexually transmitted disease.
