Congratulations to CSDE staff
Ellie Brindle and
Nathan Cosgray
for their successful proposals for Student Technology Fee funding! Both the Biodemography Core and the Computing
Core have been awarded funds from the STF to improve and augment infrastructure available to UW students.
The Student Technology Fee funds proposals from around the University that are aimed at improving "the
environment for computing and accessibility to computer resources at the UW."
This is the first year that the Biodemography Core has applied for funding through the STF mechanism.
The Lab requested funds to expand and improve student access to up-to-date analytical equipment for measurement of
several types of biomarkers, such as hormones in blood, saliva and urine, measures of body composition, or circulating
levels of micronutrients. The
CSDE Biodemography Core is available for use by students from any program on campus. In addition to students
affiliated with CSDE, the lab has worked closely with faculty and their students in a range of campus programs,
including Obstetrics and Gynecology, the College of Nursing, the Psychology department, the Epidemiology program,
and the Primate Center.
CSDE’s Computer Core provides a very different
kind of lab and equipment for students: a computer lab with high-end workstations, a selection of specialized
statistical software, high-capacity online file storage, file backup and archiving, and remote computing via Windows
2000 Terminal Services. These facilities are so popular that we currently have 400 student account holders, and the
number is growing, up 15% from this time last year. Any student with interests in demography can become affiliated and
use Center resources.
All together the awards totaled over $75,000 to upgrade hardware, augment terminal servers, and purchase
laboratory equipment. Thank you, Ellie and Nathan for your hard work on behalf of our demography students.
Special thanks also to all the faculty, staff, and students who endorsed CSDE’s STF proposals:
