Research Summary:Mary Kay Gugerty is an assistant professor of public Affairs at th Evans School of Public Affairs at UW. Her research interests focus on governance and the emergence and design of collective action institutions among individuals and organizations, with a particular focus on developing countries and sub-Saharan Africa.
Her current research focuses on two areas: the emergence of voluntary regulation and accountability programs among nonprofits and NGOs globally and the structure of emerging networks among health NGOs and their impacts on public health systems. She is the lead editor of a new volume title Nonprofit Accountability Clubs: Voluntary Regulation of Nonprofit and Nongovernmental Organizations, co-edited with Aseem Prakash. This project develops a new theoretical approach to understanding nonprofit collective accountability problems, drawing on data on these programs from around the world. She is also co-editor of another forthcoming volume, Rethinking Advocacy Organizations, also with Aseem Prakash. Gugerty is also a co-investigator in a project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that explores the nature and structure of public health networks and partnerships in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. The next phase of the project seeks to develop new methodologies for evaluating the impact of public health advocacy on public health policies and outcomes in these regions. Gugerty's previous research has examined the impact of donor funding on community organizations, the impact of ethnic diversity on local public goods provision, and the design of local level savings institutions. She holds a Ph.D. in political economy and government from Harvard University and a MPA from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. She also holds a BA in political science and economics from Georgetown University.
