Research Summary:

Marieka Klawitter is an Associate Professor and the Director of Graduate Studies for the Daniel J. Evans School of Public Affairs and holds an adjunct appointment in the Department of Women Studies. She is an economist who studies the effects of public policies on family income and work. In the last three years, she has co-authored articles on the effects of welfare policies and psychosocial variables on welfare participation of young women. These papers have contributed our understanding of the factors that influence welfare participation and, more broadly, stigmatized behaviors.

Currently, she is studying family outcomes for current and former welfare recipients in Washington state. She is a collaborator on a longitudinal study of over 4000 Washington families. State policy-makers and advocacy organizations are using the results of this work.

She has also made several contributions to a growing literature on sexual orientation and family economics. She co-authored the first study to use 1990 US Census data to study same-sex couples. That study is also the only study to assess the effects of antidiscrimination policies for sexual orientation on individual outcomes.
