Research Summary:

Diane Morrisonís research focuses on health decision making and sexual health. She uses a wide range of methods, including surveys, diary studies, and RCTs, as well as, more recently, qualitative methods. Her overarching interest is in how individuals navigate sexual situations to balance concerns about avoiding unwanted outcomes of sexual intercourse with desire for positive outcomes: avoiding unplanned pregnancy, disease, and sexual abuse while achieving pleasure and intimacy. She has conducted survey research using social psychological decision theories to model behaviors that protect against unwanted consequences of sex; RCTs to test interventions for high risk women, and for adolescents; diary studies that examine the role of intoxication on sexual risk taking; and surveys exploring sexual experiences and attitudes of LBTQ and questioning adolescents. She has published on these topics in a wide range of journals, including psychological Health Psychology, Psychology and Health, Personality and Social Psychology Review, Journal of Applied Social Psychology, Journal of Marriage and the Family, the Journal of Sex Research, Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health, AIDS Education and Prevention, and AIDS and Behavior.

More recently, she has turned her attention to more affective aspects of sexuality and sexual thinking, and is leading a study of young menís beliefs and behaviors about sex and relationships with women. This research attempts to delineate the effects of decision-model predictors (such as attitudes and intentions) and more affective and self-referential constructs such as sexual scripts and gender attitudes. It represents a new direction in her research, adding a stronger focus on social factors and context to a program of research that has heretofore focused more heavily on intrapsychic processes. This five year study was funded by NICHD in 2008 and received an ARRA supplement in 2009 [Heterosexual Men's Perspectives on Sexual Behavior and Sexual Risk Taking]. This new focus on men has led to a collaboration with CSDE Affiliate Kathleen OíConnor on developing research to examine adult menís concepts of health and health care. Another new direction in her research is collaboration on studies of physical safety in intimate relationships. She collaborates with Dr. Jeanette Norris, of the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute, on an NIAAA-funded study addressing the role of alcohol in sexual decision-making about condom use and physical safety [Alcohol Effects on Cognitive and Affective Mediation of Women's Risk Decisions], and with Drs. Lyu Mblini and Denise Walker on a NIDA-funded study of domestic violence perpetrators [Motivating Substance Abusing Batterers to Seek Treatment]. She is also collaborating with CSDE affiliates Erin Casey and Taryn Lindhorst in developing research on victimization and intimate partner violence among high school students.
