Research Summary:

Claus C. Pörtner is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Economics. His main research interests are households economics and development economics. Within household economics his focus are especially on the areas of fertility, child health and intrahousehold allocation of resources.

He is currently working on three areas. The first is the relation between income risk, fertility, child labor and education. This work is an expansion of Pörtner (2001). The second is an analysis of the use of sex selective abortions in India and the reasons behind it. The final project is on the effectiveness of adult literacy programs in Ghana.

Before joining UW he worked at the World Bank and at Georgetown University as an visiting Assistant Professor.
