Research Summary:David Takeuchi is currently Associate Dean of Research and a professor of sociology in the School of Social Work at the University of Washington. His research focuses on investigating the social structural and cultural contexts that are associated with different outcomes especially among racial and ethnic minorities. One recent example of this work examines how Chinese Americans in Los Angeles, California (N=1,610) report their health problems (forthcoming in Health). The paper tests whether a greater participation in American lifestyles is linked to higher depressive symptoms but lower neurasthenia symptoms. Depression and neurasthenia represent compelling contrasts since the first is a prevalent mental health problem in the United States and the latter is a relative common health problem in China. Analyses show that stress is linked to neurasthenia symptoms but not depressive symptoms among recent immigrants. The opposite is true for more established Chinese immigrants; stress is associated with depressive symptoms but not neurasthenia. The results argue for the inclusion of multiple indicators of health and cultural expressions of distress. In addition to this study of Chinese Americans in Los Angeles, Professor Takeuchi recently completed health surveys of Filipino Americans in San Francisco and Honolulu (N=2,400). Analyses are underway to shed light on how geographic region is associated with different outcomes for a single ethnic group.
Last year, Professor Takeuchi co-chaired with Dr. Christine Bachrach a national conference to develop a research agenda on multi-level analyses. The Office of Behavioral and Social Science Research (OBSSR) sponsored the conference and the development of the research agenda. The report, "Toward Higher Levels of Analysis: Progress and Promise in Research on Social and Cultural Dimensions of Health" is intended to forge new multidisciplinary programs that weave in the social structural, cultural, psychological, and biological factors in the study of health.
