Research Summary:

Lisa Cubbins is a Senior Research Scientist at the Battelle Centers for Public Health Research and Evaluation (CPHRE), Seattle Operations. During the past three years, her research has focused on health disparities, as well as the impact of gender inequalities on marital relationships. Her work on health disparities addresses health care access, substance use, and other health-related outcomes. In a recent article in the journal, Health (vol. 8:1, 2004), she investigated differences in the social determinants of individual health between the United States and Poland. In a paper under review, she analyzes the effects of ethnicity and family of origin characteristics on drug use over the life course. Her research on gender and marital relationships has addressed how spousal differences in education, income, and occupational status contribute to marital quality, household labor, spousal abuse, and self-reported health among Russian couples. This research demonstrates the role of spouse inequalities in shaping family characteristics. Study findings have been published in a monograph (Vannoy et al. 1999) and in the journals, Social Science and Medicine, Journal of Comparative Family Studies, Journal of Family Issues, and Journal of Marriage and Family.
