Research Summary:

April Greek is a Health Research Scientist at the Battelle Centers for Public Health Research and Evaluation (CPHRE), Seattle Operations. Dr. Greek has conducted research to understand the pathways leading to premature mortality by SES in the United States. This work is innovative by simultaneously examining multiple mediating pathways and longitudinal data on mortality. Recent research found that key factors mediating the effect of SES on adult mortality included residence in a poverty area, cigarette smoking, physical activity, use of preventive medical care, high blood pressure, and health status. In other recent work, Greek used multi-level analysis of nationally representative data to examine the impact of residence in areas of concentrated poverty on risk factors and premature mortality. The results showed that mortality in central city poverty areas was substantially higher than mortality in non-poverty areas and in areas of concentrated poverty outside of central cities. This harmful effect remained after adjusting for SES. Strong evidence was found for the effect of residence in a central city poverty area on rates of physical activity and continuity of care.

Dr. Greek and colleagues (Baydar, Kim and Joesch) also conduct work on the longitudinal and non-recursive associations between family environment and child outcomes. One current project investigates the reciprocal relation between behavior/emotional problems and achievement throughout elementary school ages. Preliminary results point to a clear longitudinal reciprocal influence between behavior/emotional problems and achievement, which is strongest at the early elementary ages. Other innovative work in this area includes recent and on-going research on the influence of testing environment on the race gap in cognition and achievement; effect of income on behavior problems and cognitive achievement across multiple methods of analysis; and, estimation of the genetic effects on behavior and achievement with kinship data.
