Research Summary:Hyoshin Kim is a research scientist at the Battelle Centers for Public Health Research and Evaluation (CPHRE), Seattle Operations. Since joining Battelle in November 1999, she has worked on research issues in the area of the family context of child/adolescent health and development. To date, she and her collaborators have produced several research papers and proposals. A recent one investigates the linkages between family income, home environment, and child outcomes. Recently Kim has worked to determine the relationship between children's mental health and their likelihood of smoking in adolescence, and to examine the contextual effects on adolescents' substance use behavior. Most recently, she and her colleagues have focused on the well-being of children with health problems. They are particularly interested in research issues involving children with asthma. Currently she and her colleagues are developing several studies addressing issues of economic and psychosocial well-being of children with asthma and their families. Kim is extending this line of research in a study to establish the total cost of childhood asthma to society, and the consequent savings to be found in addressing the issue of how much it costs to treat its comorbid conditions.
