Current Round begins February 1, 2008
The Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology (CSDE) announces a second round of our small grant program for 2007-08 that provides direct support to demography research projects and working group collaborations. This developmental program is supported by our Population Research Infrastructure Program award from EKSNICHD and the College of Arts and Sciences.
Priority for seed grant awards (up to $15,000) will be given to pilot studies and preliminary research by junior faculty and by mid-career faculty who are pursuing new directions in population research. Support for multidisciplinary working groups (up to $5,000) will fund series of meetings or discussions that explore new opportunities for collaboration and new approaches to complex problems. Successful proposals will exhibit outstanding scientific merit, innovation, and priority will be given to projects that have a high probability of generating new extramural funding.
Eligibility: To be eligible for a CSDE seed grant the applicant must be a regular (research, tenured or tenure-track) faculty member of the University of Washington and a CSDE affiliate. The principal investigator for a working group application must also be a CSDE affiliate and UW faculty member, and the proposed working group must include at least one other UW or regional CSDE affiliate. Faculty members who receive a CSDE award as PIs are ineligible to receive another until three years following the termination of the first.
Applicants may submit one application in each category and may serve as co-investigators on any number of proposals. An award may not be used to fulfill a matching funds or cost sharing requirement by any other sponsor without prior written permission. A CSDE award will be withheld or withdrawn if extramural funding for the same project is awarded to the PI or co-investigator(s). A proposal that is not funded may be resubmitted in a later round only if it is substantially revised or if the review committee recommends resubmission.
External Support: Proposals that show promise for future extramural funding will be given preference. In general, support will not be given merely to extend or supplement existing funded research projects. Instead, proposals should seek to initiate new research ideas. An extramural grant based on research funded by a CSDE small grant will be administered through CSDE, a commitment for which the principal investigator must obtain concurrence from the appropriate Chair(s) and/or Dean(s) before an award is made.
Mechanism and allowable costs: Seed grants awards will be 6 to 9 months in duration. Typical budgets for seed grants ($5,000 to $15,000) will include research related travel, graduate student research assistance, summer salary, or data acquisition costs. Faculty release time is limited to one quarter and should be based on actual replacement cost rather than salary. A request for release time requires appointing department approval. Awardees receive priority as a funded project for services from CSDE cores.
The duration of an award for a multidisciplinary working group will usually be 12 months. Typical budgets range from $500 to $5,000 and can include staff or RA support, travel for outside experts, and costs for meetings and conferences (please check with the Admin staff if your budget will include food or meals). Faculty release time for the working group PI is limited to one quarter and should be based on actual replacement cost rather than salary. A request for release time requires appointing department approval. Awardees receive priority as a funded project for services from CSDE cores.
Indirect (F&A) costs are not allowable.
Application procedure:
Seed grant proposals should include the following parts:
- Cover_Sheet. Include the project title, name and rank of principal investigator(s), and contact information (including E-mail address). Provide a short abstract (less than 250 words) and answer related research questions. Also provide signatures by the Chair of the PI’s home department and Dean’s Office. A separate application form for each Co-PI must be completed and signed by the Co-PI, Co-PI’s home department, and Deans Office.
- Description of Research (maximum of four pages)
- A. Introduction: Describe the overall project, briefly summarize the pertinent literature, and show how the project will contribute to the literature.
- B. Objectives: What is the project intended to accomplish, including specific products (e.g., papers, articles, grant proposals)?
- C. Procedures: Describe and justify methods, including models and analyses proposed, hypotheses to be tested, data to be used, etc.
- D. Time Schedule: Briefly provide a general time line of objectives to be accomplished.
- E. Optional: Why is CSDE support needed? How is the project related to future extramural funding activities?
- Budget (less than one page) and budget justification.
- Curriculum Vitae or Biosketch for key personnel (maximum of two pages each). List recent grant activity and recent major publications related to the proposed project.
- If this proposal, or a modified version of this proposal, is being submitted to another funding source (including UW sources such as Royalty Research Fund or CSSS) please explain the differences between proposals if they are distinct, or inform us that both proposals should not be funded simultaneously.
Proposals for working group support will follow a similar format, but the ‘procedures’ section of the description of research will describe the proposed activities of the working group. The description of the group’s activities and objectives will be limited to two pages.
Reporting Requirements:
Seed grants: Within six months of grant completion, a draft application for extramural funding should be submitted to CSDE, and the PI should make a final report in the form of a presentation of results at the CSDE seminar.
Working groups: A brief (max. 2 pages) final report should be submitted three months after funding completion, and the working group should share the results of their work via a CSDE seminar and/or by posting materials on CSDE website.
Submission: Proposals are due on April 1, 2008, and awards will be announced by May 15, 2008. Submit proposals to Josh Patrick, CSDE, Box 353412.
Acknowledgement of support: Publications and conference materials must include an appropriate acknowledgement, such as “Funded by [or supported by] the Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology, University of Washington.”
Questions regarding the application procedure should be directed by emailing
Shelly Lundberg, Director, CSDE.
