Abstract:
We are proposing a Kenyan-based collaboration for the NIH RFA on Global Partnerships for Social Science AIDS Research (R24). The partnership would be between the University of Washington (UW), and the University of Nairobi (UN), and would draw on a 20 year history of capacity building by the UW in HIV/AIDS research at the UN, the longstanding research collaborations already in place, as well as the unique strengths of the UW in building interdisciplinary linkages between biomedical, behavioral and social sciences in HIV/AIDS research. The RFA requires that we strengthen the research infrastructure of our partner institution and support a small portfolio of relevant and innovative research. Our proposal has 3 components: 1. to establish a professional research support staff, like our own CSDE, in the new Center for HIV Prevention and Research at the UN. CSDE professional staff would provide mentoring and technical assistance. 2. to provide faculty development through on-site short courses and development leaves at UW, and 3. to fund 4 foundational interdisciplinary research projects that involve partnerships between social and health scientists, at both the UW and UN.
