Biodemography Services

Services

Consulting Services

Consultation and direction to affiliates interested in using biomarkers in their research.

  • Consultation to identify biomarkers that can answer research questions and to determine appropriate collection, storage, transport and measurement methods

Data set identification, interpretation of lab methods documentation, and biological context for using existing biomarker data.

  • Identify biomarker data sets available from previous studies (such as NHANES and AddHealth) that may be useful for new projects.
  • Provide biological context through literature reviews, annotated bibliographies, and summaries of relevant physiological systems.
  • Provide assistance in use of these data, including evaluating assay data quality, and other potential methodological concerns.

Laboratory Services

Assist in the development and validation of new biomarker assay protocols.

  • Building new immunoassay formats and adapting them for practical and efficient use on a large scale.
  • Providing lab staff and facilities for pilot work to develop and/or adapt assay protocols, and assistance in carrying out full validation and quality control studies.

Provide experienced staff and a wet laboratory for processing of biological specimens.

  • Provide consulting, supplies, and assay services for pilot and funded research
  • Work with researchers to identify other laboratories suitable for projects not possible in the CSDE Biodemography Lab. Develop innovative methods for the collection and storage of biological specimens.
  • Develop new, non-invasive and practical methods of collection, storage and transport of serum, dried blood spot, urine, and saliva specimens appropriate to the research setting.

Provide and maintain an approved repository and an archive facility for storing and sharing biological specimens.

  • Provide a secure archive location for long-term cold storage of biological specimens.
  • Maintain an IRB approved specimen repository with mechanisms by which specimens can be added to the repository at the conclusion of a study, or withdrawn by other researchers for new projects.

Maintain and share assay protocols and biomarker methods tailored to population-based research.

  • Share specimen collection methods and assay protocols, and publish methods appropriate for population research.
  • Provide biomarker training for affiliates of CSDE and their students, and researchers from other units at the UW and elsewhere.
