Laptops
The CSDE Computing Core maintains a limited number of laptop computers for CSDE affiliated faculty and students to check out on a first come first serve basis. All possess a floppy disk drive, a CD-RW drive, and a wireless internet card. The laptops are configured with the standard suite of CSDE computing software (Microsoft Office, VirusScan, UWICK, Firefox, etc.) One Apple Powerbook is also available.
CSDE affiliated UW Students may borrow laptops for job interviews, professional presentations, library/archival research, the CSDE colloquium series, and depending on availability, for any other work or study related reason.
CSDE affiliated UW Faculty may borrow laptops for conferences, professional and on-campus presentations, library/archival research both on-campus and off-campus, and depending on availability, for any other work-related reason.
If you have a license for more specialized software and want to use it, you may install a copy on the hard drive, or use it from the CD drive. CSDE Computing Core staff will re-image the laptop to its original configuration upon return and all personal documents and software will be erased.
The normal checkout period is two weeks or less. Special permission is required for a longer checkout period. Please note, a valid Husky Card AND state issued photo ID are required in order to check out equipment from CSDE.
Projectors
The CSDE Computing Core maintains two projectors which are also available for checkout. These projectors are designed to be used with laptop or desktop computers for presentations. These projectors may be borrowed by CSDE affiliated students and faculty on a first come first serve basis. The normal checkout period is two weeks or less. Special permission is required for a longer checkout period.
Taking Borrowed Laptops Abroad
Only CSDE affiliated faculty and graduate students may take borrowed equipment abroad. Per the UW’s insurance carrier, “abroad” constitutes anywhere outside the continental USA, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Canada. US Territory Possessions and Mexico are considered “foreign locations” for insurance purposes.
If the equipment is to be taken abroad, a customs letter is required to be carried with the equipment. If you wish to borrow equipment for your use abroad, please make your reservation at 1 week in advance to allow for this letter to be obtained from the UW Equipment Inventory Office. We also need the time to make special arrangements regarding foreign insurance coverage.
How to Check Out Equipment
To borrow or reserve any of the listed computer equipment or to check on availability, contact:
The CSDE Help Desk
218 Raitt Hall
E-mail

Please indicate the date and time that you want to pick it up, and when you will return it. If requesting to take equipment abroad, please indicate the location and the length of time you wish to borrow the equipment. Additionally, please allow time for a brief introduction as to the operation of the equipment.
Additional Equipment Resources for Students
Students who are currently registered at the UW may also borrow STF-funded laptops or projectors from UW Classroom Support Services, which has offices in Kane Hall and Mary Gates Hall. However, they require 24 hours advance notice before loaning out equipment. You can find more information on their web site:

Wireless Internet Connectivity on the Main UW Campus

Temporary Access to UW Wireless Networks
In 2006, UW Computing & Communications released a new service to give visitors temporary access to the UW's wireless networks. This service allows any UW faculty, staff or student employee to assign a temporary UW NetID to an individual or group so they can access off-campus resources through the campus wireless network. Click here for more information on this service.
Getting Connected on the Road
When on the road, there are few options available for connectivity:
- You may connect to the UW's dial-in modem pool using the laptop's modem card, but it may be a long-distance phone call.
If you have a project which provides you a UWATTS long distance charge card, you can use that to dial in from afar. If you intend
to use the modem pool, you must first enable that service for your UWNetID account. To do so, first
click here and log in.. Then select "Turn services on or off" on
the left-hand side, and make sure that "Dial-in Modems" is listed as a service that is ON.
for more information about the UW's dial-in modem pool.

for information about international connectivity to the UW.
- All of the CSDE laptops have wireless networking capability, either built-in or as a PCMCIA card, so if locations where you travel have wireless access points available you will have access to the internet. Do note many public wireless access points (airports, coffee shops, trains stations, etc.) may charge a fee for the use of their network.
Refer to these websites to search for possible free wireless access close to you:
If you have to pay for wireless access and your trip is being funded by the university, you should save your receipt for later reimbursement.
