Mobile GIS Equipment




Beginning Autumn Quarter 2009, CSDE has expanded its capabilities to include mobile GIS. Now, it's possible to collect spatial data and conduct GIS analysis in the field. Through funding provided by the UW Student Technology Fee, CSDE offers GIS-enabled equipment for checkout to affiliated students, staff, and faculty on a first come, first serve basis. Available equipment includes 3 semi-ruggedized laptops, a mini-projector, 20 handheld GPS units, and 3 laser rangefinders.

Spatial data collected with the Juno are fully compatible with ArcGIS. Each unit can be used to collect basic alpha/numeric survey data in the field in addition to recording latitude and longitude coordinates. The GPS units are suitable for use anywhere in the world.


Laser Rangefinders

Used in conjuction with the Juno SB, the rangefinders are able to gather geographic coordinates for distant objects. On their own, they can collect a variety of height and slope measurements.


How to Check Out Equipment

To borrow, reserve or ask questions about any of the listed Mobile GIS equipment, email: Matt Dunbar - CSDE GIS Specialist

Please indicate the type and quantity of equipment you would like to check out, the date and time that you want to pick it up, and when you will return it. If requesting to take equipment abroad, please indicate the location and the length of time you wish plan to have the equipment abroad. Additionally, please allow time when you pick up equipment for a brief introduction as to the its operation.

Please note, a valid Husky Card AND state issued photo ID are required in order to check out equipment from CSDE.

If you have a license for more specialized software and want to use it, you may install a copy on the hard drive of the laptops or on the SD cards of the Trimble Juno handhelds. CSDE will re-image the laptops and June handhelds to their original configuration upon return and all personal documents and software will be erased.
