The goal of CSDE's GIS workshops is to provide a rapid introduction to GIS and its application to demographic research.
Please see Data and Resources for additional self-guided training on the web and formal coursework at UW.
The first CSDE GIS workshops, Intro to GIS I & II, are intended to be taken as a series. Upon completion, participants will possess a basic
working knowledge of GIS and ESRI's ArcGIS software as applied to population studies. Beginning Spring 2009, CSDE is happy to offer two sessions for
each workshop and new Instructor-Supported GIS Lab Sessions.
Potential future workshop topics include: spatial analysis techniques, sptial statistics, data management, handheld GIS for field data
colleciton and visualization. Please let us know if there are GIS topics that might be of interest.
- Introduction to GIS I
This workshop will begin by presenting an overview of the basic concepts of GIS. Armed with an understanding of
what GIS is, students will complete a hands-on tutorial introducing ESRI's ArcGIS 9.3 software. Topics covered in
the lab will include: working with GIS data, simple data queries, and map creation (symbolization, labeling, layout and export).
Tuesday, October 6th
1:00 - 4:00pm
223 Raitt Hall (CSDE Computer Lab)
No prior GIS experience required
- Introduction to GIS II
Building on the basic concepts covered by Intro to GIS I, this workshop will focus entirely on hands-on training in GIS for
demographic research. Topics covered in the lab will include: acquiring GIS and census data, synthesizing multiple data sources,
and basic GIS analysis.
Tuesday, October 13th
1:00 - 4:00pm
223 Raitt Hall (CSDE Computer Lab)
Some prior experience with GIS recommended (Intro to GIS I)
- Introduction to Mobile GIS
Learn to use ESRI's Mobile GIS software, ArcPad, on STF funded Trimble Juno handheld GPS units. Topics covered in the lab will include:
introduction to ArcPad, transferring data to/from handheld computers, GPS basics, creating simple field data collection forms, and outdoor
exercises.
