China Historical Geographic Information System - CHGIS
The China Historical Geographic Information System (CHGIS) project was launched on January 8th 2001, with funding from the Luce Foundation. The CHGIS will establish a database of historical administrative units for different periods in Chinese History, and will also provide a base GIS platform for researchers to use for spatial analysis, temporal statistical modeling, and representation of selected historical units as digital maps.

The participating institutions have joined together to form CHGIS with the idea of creating a new digital product for free distribution to scholars without restriction. The copyright for the official CHGIS data model is held by the CHGIS management committee at Harvard Yenching Institute, while each contributing institution retains the copyrights for their own original materials and may further develop their own research materials as they see fit. While each contributor retains all rights to their original data compilations, each contributor also grants a license to the CHGIS management committee for unlimited distribution of the official CHGIS publications. This arrangement has been made so that there will be at least one freely available GIS platform for use in teaching, research, and publications which scholars and interested parties can easily obtain and have permission to use in their work.

More information, including links to download the data files, can be found at CHGIS.
Data Sharing for Demographic Research - DSDR
Data Sharing for Demographic Research (DSDR) is a project of the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) in collaboration with the Carolina Population Center (CPC) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Minnesota Population Center (MPC) at the University of Minnesota, and the Population Studies Center ( PSC) at the University of Michigan. DSDR supports researchers -- both those who collect data and those who wish to use data -- in dealing with complex data and data requiring special security.

More information can be found at DSDR.
