statnet installation

Current version

The current version of the package is statnet 2.0. This is our second public release, and the first public release on CRAN. We are making constant modifications to improve the speed, diagnostics and functionality, designated by changes to the version number, 2.0-x.  When you load statnet the version number will be displayed.  If you want to be notified of updates, join the statnet mailing list.  Updating is very easy, directions are included below.

License and citation

statnet software is distributed free and and open source under the GPL-3 license with attribution requirements.

License information can be found here.

We have invested a lot of time and effort in making 'statnet' usable by other researchers. In return, the license requires that the attributions in the software and documentation are retained (even if only pieces of it are used), and that there is attribution when the package is loaded (e.g., via "library" or "require"). This is the default, so you only need to do something if you are going to modify or redistribute the source.

If you use the statnet program in a published analysis, or for any unpublished material that you distribute (e.g., conference presentations, teaching, working  papers), we ask that you acknowledge this by citing the program.

Citation information can be found here.

Downloading the Program

statnet will run in any environment that supports R , including Windows, LINUX and Macintosh machines.

Obtaining the current version of statnet involves two main steps: downloading R, and then installing the statnet package within.  If you already have the most recent version of R you can skip Step 1 of the instructions. Those with a previous version of R, please be sure to follow Step 1 in order to update, as both access to and functionality of statnet will depend on the current version of R.

Step 1.  DownloadingR (currently version 2.7.0):

  1. Go to http://cran.r-project.org/, and select Mirrors from the left-hand
    menu.
  2. Select a location near you.
  3. From the "Download and Install R" section, select the link for your
operating system.  Follow the instructions on the relevant page.  Note that you
need to download only the base distribution, not the contributed packages.
  4. Once you have downloaded the installation file, follow the instructions for
    installation.

Step 2.  Downloading and installing statnet:

  1. Open R
  2. Install statnet  At the R cursor >, type:   install.packages("statnet")
  3. Open the statnet libraries At the R cursor >, type:

    library("statnet")

Now, and in the future, you can update statnet at any point. To do this, at the R cursor, type:

           update.statnet()

Follow the directions; feel free to say no to any optional packages, although we recommend saying yes. The first choice provided is to install all the required and optional packages.

Step 3.  Join the statnet Community:

We have set up a message board for statnet users to:

  • get help from the statnet development team (and other users)
  • post questions and ideas to other users
  • be informed about statnet updates
  • learn about bugs (and bug fixes)

Information about joining the list is available at https://mailman.u.washington.edu/mailman/listinfo/statnet_help

Once you have joined the list, you can post your questions and comments to statnet_help at u.washington.edu

A full history of all messages posted to this list is available at https://mailman.u.washington.edu/mailman/private/statnet_help/

Step 4.  Getting Started - a tutorial:

A good way to get going is to work through Steve Goodreau's excellent step-by-step statnet tutorial.

There is also extensive help on this website (starting from the home page).
