Methodological Issues in Using Biomarker Data for Demographic Research

This class is a two-hour discussion of how biomarkers are used in population research, and the types of measurement error and statistical issues frequently encountered when using biomarker data. All are welcome.

Class Description

Biomarkers are increasingly being used to address long-standing questions in biodemography, particularly in the areas of health, nutrition, and aging. In this workshop, we will discuss:

  • What is meant by the term “biomarker” and introduce some basic principles used in biomarker measurements,
  • The use of biomarker data in recent work, and explore emerging trends in biomarker research,
  • Existing biomarker data sets (what kinds of data are available, how to use information about the quality of the data), and
  • Statistical considerations for biomarker data, including handling non-independence, power analyses given biomarker measurement error, sensitivity and specificity, and others.
