Training - Overview

Graduate students at the University of Washington can specialize in demography as part of their M.A. or Ph.D. programs in a social science discipline. Graduate students typically enroll in Sociology, Economics, Anthropology, or Geography. They may also specialize in demography as part of a program of study in Statistics or Social Work.

If enrolled in Sociology, students can major or minor in demography. The Sociology Department regularly offers the following classes: Demography and Ecology, and Research Methods in Demography. Demographic Studies of Stratification and other advanced courses are also offered. Students seeking degrees in other disciplines usually take Demography and Ecology, and Research Methods in Demography, and then pursue further coursework in their home departments. The Center for Statistics and the Social Sciences offers outstanding opportunities for advanced training and research in methods applicable to demographic research.

Please see here for a list of graduate level courses in demography and population studies offered by CSDE and by the departments most closely connected with CSDE. More information about graduate programs and courses is available from the web sites of those departments.

CSDE provides fellowships for selected, highly qualified graduate students who specialize in demography and population studies as part of their doctoral programs. Applicants for CSDE Fellowships are typically enrolled in Sociology, Economics, Anthropology or Geography.
