Training - Overview

Graduate students at the University of Washington can specialize in demography as part of their M.A. or Ph.D. programs. Students who specialize in demography typically enroll in Sociology, Economics, Anthropology, or Geography, but also do so from a wide range of other UW departments and schools, including International Studies, Public Affairs, Statistics, Social Work, and Urban Planning.

Graduate students in Sociology can major or minor in demography as part of their disciplinary studies. The Sociology Department regularly offers the four core population studies courses: Demography and Ecology (SOC/CSDE 513), Research Methods in Demography (SOC/CSDE 433), Fertility and Mortality (SOC 431), and Urbanization and Urbanism (SOC 430). Students who specialize in demography from other disciplines usually take at least two of the sociology courses (513 and 433) in addition to population related courses in their own department. The Center for Statistics and the Social Sciences offers outstanding opportunities for advanced training and research in methods applicable to demographic research.

Please see here for a list of graduate level courses in population studies offered by CSDE and by the departments affiliated with CSDE. More information about graduate programs and courses is available here.

Students who plan to formally specialize in demography (akin to a minor) can apply for admission to the CSDE Fellows Program. Although participation in the CSDE Fellows does not provide financial assistance, CSDE Fellows are eligible to apply for a CSDE funded traineeships that provide financial support for about six students per year.
