Assignments
- Each week, everyone should do the readings, and show up to class with 2-3 questions or discussion points.
- Additionally, one student (or two, depending on final class size) will present the main findings and their
own critical questions from the week’s readings. This should be about a 20 minute presentation in addition to
leading group discussion.
The presentations will not be a slide-show or PowerPoint file. Handouts are OK if you’d like. This is a good
opportunity to sort out your thoughts and practice communicating a compressive “story” to your colleagues.
Are there any common themes in the readings? Read critically. What aspects to you agree with, and what
arguments are weak? What types of policy interventions or ethical questions arise? Keep the audience interested!
- One policy paper (approximately 20 pages) on a topic concerning the broad area of migration and health
is due Tuesday, March 13th. Specific topics for the papers are based on discussion between the instructor and
each student individually. The papers are designed to mesh well with the specific interests of each student.
Think about how this can be molded into a ‘publishable quality” review (or the motivation for a research) paper.
Journals may include: Annual review of sociology, Population Development Review, others?
