This week, 4 CSDE Fellows, 9 CSDE Trainees, and 28 CSDE Affiliates are scheduled to participate as presenters, chairs, coauthors, and discussants at the upcoming 2019 Population Association of America meeting, in Austin. Our scholars tackle a wide range of demographic issues, represented in the varied presentations listed here.

CSDE will also sponsor an IAPHS panel discussion and reception on community-engaged research titled “Population Health Reception: The Perils and Promise of Community Engaged Research” (Wednesday, 4/10/2019, 6:00-7:30 PM, JW Marriott, Brazos 206).

Using linked hospital and death records, they examined residence and injury locations for firearm assaults and homicides in or among residents of King County from January 2010 to December 2014.

Congratulations to CSDE Affiliate Clara Berridge, Assistant Professor of Social Work, who was just awarded a four-year K01 grant from the National Institute on Aging for her project “Engaging older adults with cognitive impairment in planning for technology use in their care: the Identifying Needs for Optimal Remote Monitoring tool (INFORM).” According to Berridge, this research will produce a communication and education tool to support family decision making about technologies that monitor older adults’ activity to enhance fall detection, emergency response, independence, and postponement of institutionalization.

CSDE’s Grant Writing Summer Program is designed to assist early-career scholars and those who are relatively new to writing NIH grant applications. Participants will be coached through the process of developing a competitive application, learn more about NIH grant mechanisms, writing, and reviewing, and engage in an intensive writing workshop with regular meetings, discussion sessions, and feedback. CSDE aims to demystify the grant-writing process and create a supportive environment that produces proposals ready for submission by the Fall. Applications are due by 6:00 PM on 5/3/2019.

UW News and the Office for Faculty Advancement are hosting a seminar and workshops on 5/2 and 5/3/2019 for faculty, postdocs, graduate students and other UW-affiliated researchers interested in writing analysis and opinion pieces for mainstream audiences. They hope to help UW researchers share their knowledge worldwide by helping them learn how to write for general audiences and how to approach nonacademic publishing venues.
