Fathers’ Multiple-Partner Fertility and Children’s Educational Outcomes
When: Friday, Jan 10, 2020 (12:30 - 1:30 PM) Where: 121 Raitt Hall
This Friday, Robert Pollak from the Department of Economics at Washington University in St. Louis will present his paper Fathers’ Multiple-Partner Fertility and Children’s Educational Outcomes. In the paper, Pollak and his co-authors find substantial and statistically significant detrimental effects of fathers’ multiple-partner fertility (MPF) on children’s educational outcomes. Pollak’s analysis suggests that the effects of fathers’ MPF are primarily due to selection and emphasizes the importance of unobserved parental characteristics as determinants of children’s educational outcomes.

Kam Wing Chan Addresses Growing Population of Left-Behind Children in China
China has the world’s largest elderly population—a population concern that is now leading to critical social and economic challenges in the country. Paradoxically, China also faces a growing population of ‘left-behind’ children. In a recently published paper titled “China’s Precious Children” (published in Eurasian Geography and Economics), CSDE Affiliate and Professor of Geography Kam Wing Chan finds a growing population of left-behind rural children and urban children separated from their parents. Chan finds there are now about 88 million such children who are separated from their parents, do not receive substantial education, and are left in deprived situations—these children account for nearly 40% of all Chinese children.

NIH focuses on clinical research and by that they also mean behavioral and social science research that involves collecting any type of information or materials from individuals. They seek advice on understanding a whole host of barriers and challenges related to inclusion across age, underrepresented populations, and vulnerable populations. Your feedback will inform NIH’s Inclusion Across the Lifespan II Workshop planned for 2020. Click here to provide your feedback.
