CSDE is developing its first annual summer grant writing program – a chance for you to learn more about NIH grant-writing and to workshop your proposal with other participants and with experienced senior faculty. Writing a grant in isolation can be mystifying—instead, we aim to create a group experience that is still hard work, but which will be supportive, fun, productive, and ultimately rewarding.

CSDE’s Executive Committee is pleased to welcome ten new affiliates! These affiliates bring a wealth of knowledge and unique approaches that enhances our community of demographers and collectively advances population science. Congratulations to Affiliate Ali Rowhani-Rahbar, who was recently appointed to the Bartley Dobb Professorship for the Study and Prevention of Violence.  The current holder of this professorship is fellow Affiliate Richard Catalano. Established in 1997, this five-year endowment funds an appointed University of Washington (UW) faculty member for their work in the study and prevention of violence through resolution of conflict.

More than 80 students are currently studying Data Visualization in CSE 512, and will spend the latter half of the quarter developing final projects. Each year, many of the best projects result from partnerships with researchers across campus.

If you have a data analysis or communication challenges that you’d like to see visualization students address and are willing to provide the student with a bit on guidance, submit your proposal below.

At the upcoming 2018 PAA meeting, 39 CSDE Fellows, Trainees, and Affiliates are scheduled to participate as presenters, chairs, and discussants. Our scholars tackle a wide range of demographic issues, represented in the varied presentations listed below.

CSDE recently collaborated with Jennifer Heerwig, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Stony Brook University, and Brian McCabe, Associate Professor of Sociology at Georgetown University and Visiting Scholar a University of Washington, on a policy brief that assesses the impact of Seattle’s Democracy Voucher Program. This policy brief is a foray into a new area for CSDE.
