UW Data Collaborative (UWDC) Launch Party

The Center for the Studies in Demography & Ecology, in partnership with the Population Health Initiative and Urban@UW, is pleased to announce the launch of the University of Washington Data Collaborative (UWDC), a new data and administrative infrastructure for storing and accessing innovative data, and building collaborations across the campus community.

“Aging Across UW” Reception and Flash Talks

April 18, 4:00 – 5:30pm, Location TBD.

Join CSDE as we bring together students, faculty, and staff to discuss aging-related research and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. Selected faculty members from Health Services, Anthropology, Biology, Social Work, and the Simpson Center for the Humanities will give flash talks on their research agendas and aging-related research activities happening in their departments. Apply to CSDE’s 2019 Grant Writing Summer Program!

CSDE’s Grant Writing Summer Program is designed to assist early-career scholars and those who are relatively new to writing NIH grant applications. Participants will be coached through the process of developing a competitive application, learn more about NIH grant mechanisms, writing, and reviewing, and engage in an intensive writing workshop with regular meetings, discussion sessions, and feedback. CSDE aims to demystify the grant-writing process and create a supportive environment that produces proposals ready for submission by the Fall.

UW News Features Amelia Gavin’s Research on Effects of Stress and Racism on Preterm Birth

CSDE Affiliate Amelia Gavin, Associate Professor at the School of Social Work, was recently featured in a UW News story about a Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice paper in which she connects racial discrimination to PTSD, and thus to preterm birth.

According to Gavin, “Pregnancy is a stress test for the body. If you’ve been stressed during your life through discrimination, poverty and residential segregation, then the likelihood of having a healthy birth outcome has been compromised.”

Gavin’s article finds that African-American women are nearly twice as likely to give birth prematurely as white women.

Lee Fiorio and Connor Gilroy Use Social Media Data to Understand the World

Lee Fiorio, Geography doctoral student, and Connor Gilroy, Sociology doctoral student, are CSDE Trainees, former Funded Fellows, and leaders of the Computational Demography Working Group. The UW College of Arts & Sciences has recently published a story featuring their incredible research at the leading edge of data science and social science.
