CSDE Seminar Series

No Seminar this Friday, We’ll See You at PAA!

This week, 4 CSDE Fellows, 9 CSDE Trainees, and 28 CSDE Affiliates are scheduled to participate as presenters, chairs, coauthors, and discussants at the upcoming 2019 Population Association of America meeting, in Austin. Our scholars tackle a wide range of demographic issues, represented in the varied presentations listed here.

CSDE will also sponsor an IAPHS panel discussion and reception on community-engaged research titled “Population Health Reception: The Perils and Promise of Community Engaged Research” (Wednesday, 4/10/2019, 6:00-7:30 PM, JW Marriott, Brazos 206).

CSDE Research & Highlights

Affiliates Publish Results of CSDE-Funded Study of Firearm Injury Spatial Patterns in King County
A group of CSDE scholars including Fellow Alumna Brianna Mills, Epidemiology PhD, and Affiliates Anjum Hajat, Assistant Professor of Epidemiology, Paula Nurius, Professor of Social Work, Ross Matsueda, Professor of Sociology, and Ali Rowhani-Rahbar, Professor of Epidemiology, recently published a paper titled “Firearm assault injuries by residence and injury occurrence location” in Injury Prevention. CSDE supported this study through the Shanahan Fellowship.

Using linked hospital and death records, they examined residence and injury locations for firearm assaults and homicides in or among residents of King County from January 2010 to December 2014.

Clara Berridge Receives Four-Year K01 from the National Institute on Aging

Congratulations to CSDE Affiliate Clara Berridge, Assistant Professor of Social Work, who was just awarded a four-year K01 grant from the National Institute on Aging for her project “Engaging older adults with cognitive impairment in planning for technology use in their care: the Identifying Needs for Optimal Remote Monitoring tool (INFORM).” According to Berridge, this research will produce a communication and education tool to support family decision making about technologies that monitor older adults’ activity to enhance fall detection, emergency response, independence, and postponement of institutionalization.

“Aging Across UW” Reception and Flash Talks

Join CSDE on 4/18/2019, 4:00 – 5:30 PM, McMahon Hall, Pompeii Room, as we bring together students, faculty, and staff to discuss aging-related research and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. Selected faculty members from Health Services, Anthropology, Biology, Social Work, and the Simpson Center for the Humanities will give flash talks on their research agendas and aging-related research activities happening in their departments. CSDE, in partnership with the Population Health Initiative and Urban@UW, is pleased to announce the launch of the University of Washington Data Collaborative (UWDC), a new data and administrative infrastructure for storing and accessing innovative data, and building collaborations across the campus community.

Apply to CSDE’s 2019 Grant Writing Summer Program!

CSDE’s Grant Writing Summer Program is designed to assist early-career scholars and those who are relatively new to writing NIH grant applications. Participants will be coached through the process of developing a competitive application, learn more about NIH grant mechanisms, writing, and reviewing, and engage in an intensive writing workshop with regular meetings, discussion sessions, and feedback. CSDE aims to demystify the grant-writing process and create a supportive environment that produces proposals ready for submission by the Fall. Applications are due by 6:00 PM on 5/3/2019.

Share Your Research with a General Audience: Seminar and Workshop with The Conversation’s Data Editor

We know that population scientists have crucial research insights to share! Are you interested in sharing them a more general audience?

UW News and the Office for Faculty Advancement are hosting a seminar and workshops on 5/2 and 5/3/2019 for faculty, postdocs, graduate students and other UW-affiliated researchers interested in writing analysis and opinion pieces for mainstream audiences. They hope to help UW researchers share their knowledge worldwide by helping them learn how to write for general audiences and how to approach nonacademic publishing venues.
