Bostrom and Colleagues Publish New Findings on Environmental Disaster Preparedness

CSDE Affiliate Ann Bostrom, along with a number of co-authors, recently published research titled “Community Preparedness for Volcanic Hazards at Mount Rainier, USA.” The authors use survey data from communities near Mount Rainier to explore how factors including demographics, social effects such as perceptions of community preparedness, evacuation drills, and cognitive factors such as risk perception and self-efficacy relate to preparedness when living within or nearby a volcanic hazard zone.

New Findings on Monetary Sanctions & Women’s Incarceration from Kennedy and Co-Authors

CSDE Trainee Ian Kennedy and their co-authors Kate O'Neill and Tyler Smith published a new paper early this month exploring the connections between monetary sanctions and women's incarceration. The full paper is available HERE. Using data from Washington State, the authors find county dependence on monetary sanctions for revenue is positively associated with rates of women sentenced to incarceration. Although rural counties’ rates are higher, they depend on monetary sanctions no more than nonrural counties do.

Are you a population forecasting expert? Portland State Looks for Demographers

Portland State University’s Population Center is looking to hire two researchers to produce county level forecasts for Oregon. The senior position (posting available HERE) will lead research and production of Oregon county level population projections with race/ethnicity, sex, and age detail. Oregon counties range in size from around 1,000 persons to 800,000, so knowledge of small area methods is important, in addition to familiarity with demographic methods and census data. The position is full time with benefits; remote or hybrid work possible. It's listed as a senior research assistant so that it's possible to reach persons who are ABD, but the position will be made appropriate to the rank of the best candidate. The postdoctoral position (posting available HERE) will involve collaborating on a research plan with PRC faculty and working on a research agenda related to migration, small area population estimates, remote sensing, and demographic analysis to support redistricting.

Call for CSDE Proposals: Population Research Planning Grants

CSDE has funds available to provide a variety of forms of support for affiliates submitting grants from now through this summer. This might include funding for hiring an RA (quarterly or hourly), hosting or hiring consultants from inside or outside UW, hiring CSDE scientific staff, acquiring data sets, organizing a mini-workshop or writing retreat, or many other possibilities!  One key restriction, however, is that funds cannot be used for faculty salary support or course buyout.

Applications are rolling, and CSDE's core leadership will review proposals every two weeks until the funds are exhausted. Early applications are encouraged!
