The impact of COVID-19 on Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander well-being

This week we are excited to host UW Professor of Social Work and Director of Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and Oceania Affairs at the Indigenous Wellness Research Institute (IWRI), Dr. Michael Spencer! Dr. Spencer's lecture will focus on the impact and response of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) communities to COVID-19 in Washington state.

Lapham Receives 2022-23 Magnuson Scholarship
Zhang, Xu, and Zhao Propose Methodological Approach for ‘Big Data’ Analyses
Shaozeng Zhang, with CSDE Affiliates Dafeng Xu and Bo Zhao recently published a new article in Methodological Innovations. First, the authors develop a methodological approach which guides the selection and processing of big data to make big data smaller and structured for analyses within social sciences conventional methods. Second, the authors apply this methodology to Google's mobility dataset to conduct a difference-in-differences analysis of social distancing behavior. (read more)

New Article from Wachter & Acolin: “Homeownership in the Long Run”
Susan Wachter and CSDE Affiliate Arthur Acolin recently published an article in the Journal of Comparative Urban Law and Policy. The authors discuss what is known about homeownership outcomes and policies: how borrowing constraints and housing affordability are impacting current homeownership outcomes; how the trajectory of homeownership rates over time from pre-Great Depression through the current period reflects lending regimes; and how future trajectories based on projected demographic trends and lending environments imply a very different future for U.S. homeownership outcomes. CSDE-Sponsored, Student-Led Event: “Roe v Wade: Impact, Solution, and Empowerment”
This event is an opportunity for activists, organizations, and the greater community to come together and discuss what is at stake for Roe v Wade, and its place within the Reproductive justice movement. The event is sponsored by the UW Alene Moris Women's Center, as well as the Center for Studies in Demography & Ecology. Join us on Saturday, May 21st, 2022 at 10:00 am – 2:30 pm PST for a safe space of education, dialogue, and empowerment to provide actionable steps and resources to help advocate for reproductive rights.
