CSDE Welcomes Ayala as *New* Executive Director of the Northwest Federal Statistical Research Data Center (NWFSRDC)

During the spring quarter, CSDE welcomed Dr. Sofia Ayala as a Research Scientist and Executive Director of the Northwest Federal Statistical Research Data Center (NWFSRDC). She joins our team of experienced research scientists whose mission is to facilitate population research among CSDE Affiliates and Graduate Trainees. The NWFSRDC offers a secure access-point for qualified researchers with approved projects to conduct research using restricted-use micro data from the U.S. Census Bureau and other government agencies and entities across the U.S.federal statistical system. Sofia assumes this leadership role from our Dr. Mark Ellis, who spearheaded the NWFSRDC’s establishment in 2012 and has been its executive director since then. We deeply thank Mark for his service to the NWFSRDC and the national FSRDC program and look forward to his continued advice to expand research that uses restricted-use microdata at UW and other Pacific Northwest institutions.

NSF Announces 7 new National Artificial Intelligence Research Institutes
|
The U.S. National Science Foundation, in collaboration with other federal agencies, higher education institutions and other stakeholders, today announced a $140 million investment to establish seven new National Artificial Intelligence Research Institutes. The announcement is part of a broader effort across the federal government to advance a cohesive approach to AI-related opportunities and risks.

Population Health Initiative is Hiring a Temp Research Scientist for Vaccine Disparities Research
The Population Health Initiative has an outstanding opportunity for a Temporary Research Scientist to join our team. This position is full-time and anticipated to be 11 months in duration. The Research Scientist will be a core member of a mixed-methods study to compare resilient immunization programs in the United States and Canada to reduce racial gaps in vaccination levels. Key activities include measuring and reviewing changes in vaccine equity in Canada over time, identifying which public health interventions or public policies have most effectively improved immunization equity, and comparing findings with a recently completed study of U.S. immunization programs.

Anna Malinovskaya of Cornell University will present her research titled, “Long Term Own and Dynamic Complementarity Effects of the WIC program.” The FSRDC Presentation Series offers a virtual platform for researchers who have conducted research in a Federal Statistical Research Data Center (FSRDC) to share their work. *New* IRS Joint Statistical Research Program Seeks Proposals (Due 6/30/23)
Through its Joint Statistical Research Program (JSRP), Statistics of Income (SOI) seeks to enable the use of tax microdata by qualified researchers outside the Federal government. Such research can provide new insights and advance the understanding of the ways that existing tax policies affect individuals, businesses, and the economy. It can also provide a new understanding of taxpayer behavior to aid in the administration of the U.S. tax system. Finally, such research can lead to the development of new datasets useful for future tax administration research, as well as new tabulations that can be released to the public.

IES Releases Two New FY 2024 Requests for Applications (8/17/23)
The Institute of Education Sciences has released two new requests for applications for fiscal year 2024 (FY 2024) and invites applications for the Using Longitudinal Data to Support State Education Policymaking Grants program (84.305S) and the Transformative Research in the Education Sciences Grants program (84.305T) with applications due August 17, 2023.
Through the Using Longitudinal Data to Support State Education Policymaking grant program, IES supports state agencies to use their state’s education longitudinal data systems (SLDS) to provide evidence for their own program and policy decisions and those of their local education agencies.

Call for Abstracts: 23rd Annual IGSC Conference (Due 9/15/23)
The East-West Center International Graduate Student Conference (IGSC) is accepting abstracts from current graduate students, as well as from scholars, practitioners, artists, and scientists, who have completed a graduate degree within the past three years. IGSC welcomes abstracts globally and from any discipline related to the US and Asia-Pacific region.
This year’s theme is Elucidating the Periphery: Rethinking Neglected Narratives and Novel Approaches. This student organized conference provides an opportunity to venture beyond one’s own boundaries to interface with neglected narratives from peripheral perspectives as well as novel techniques in a transdisciplinary context.

Two new calls seek basic observational or experimental behavioral and/or social science R01 applications that test how intrapersonal and interpersonal mechanisms of behavior change interact with, influence, or are influenced by characteristics of social networks, with implications for health. Research supported through this NOFO will examine at least two levels of analysis: interpersonal processes and social network characteristics. Projects will identify targets for future social network health behavior change interventions across the lifespan, especially in populations in which they are currently largely underdeveloped and untested

CSDE is available to provide matching in-kind or monetary support to accompany a submission to other on-campus funding mechanism, such as Earthlab, Population Health Initiative, Royalty Research Fund, or Urban@UW
All projects inquiring about matching funds, must have a CSDE affiliate who is a UW faculty and will be listed as a PI or co-PI.
