Fifty researchers from across the country will gather Sept. 9-13 at the University of Washington to tackle the challenge of providing timely, integrated information about community responses to severe climate-related events. The goal of the Disasters, Demography, Data Science & Decisions (D4) Hack Week, funded by NOAA and NIH support from a Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development research infrastructure grant (P2C HD042828), is to provide policymakers with better models and integrated data for anticipating communities’ needs before, during and after natural disasters.

Specifically, the effort seeks to understand the disparate impacts across populations, and the decisions that need to be made related to severe weather events like flooding, hurricanes and wildfire. Beside addressing data integration challenges, the teams will also develop AI tools for data integration and new approaches to managing uncertainties.

Researchers have formed seven teams tackling improvements in understanding the impacts of severe weather events including flooding from atmospheric rivers, wildfire, and tropical cyclones. Teams will present progress on their projects 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12 and these can be viewed via livestream on the UW Center for Studies in Demography & Ecology (CSDE) YouTube channel.

CSDE Affiliate Nathalie Williams recently received an Ethical and Responsible Research Grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). There is much research and data collection on population health in areas and territories that are affected by conflict. Different countries and institutions have different practices and guidelines when it comes to conducting this research, which can cause challenges like data quality and access, risks of re-traumatizing research subjects, and the politicization of data and research findings. This project aims to compare and contrast the various practices of population and health research in conflict-affected areas to generate standardized guidelines and best practices for all those who work in this area.

The Northwest Multiple Listing Service, which tracks real estate trends in 26 of the 39 Washington counties, recently released data that states that there are more homes on the market this month than there were a year ago. While new listings are up, interest rates may come down. On August 1st, the rates were 6.73%, which is the lowest since February, but that interest rate is still a significant difference from the average of 3.94% that it was five years ago. However, this may change in the future. CSDE Affiliate Steven Bourassa, Director of the Washington Center for Real Estate Research at UW, says that the Federal Open Market Committee of the Federal Reserve Bank will lower rates next month. CSDE Affiliate David Swanson (UC Riverside) recently published the research article, “Estimating the stochastic uncertainty underlying sample-based estimates of infant mortality in the Philippines: a first-time application to a country in the Southeast Asia/Pacific Basin region” in Asian Population Studies. When making health policy decisions, infant mortality is a very important population health statistic that is taken into account, but unfortunately this data is not available for all populations. A newly-developed method was “presented for accounting for the stochastic uncertainty found in infant mortality rates (IMRs) estimated from sample surveys and for the first time applied to a country in the Southeast Asian/Pacific Basin area, the Philippines.  The method is founded on the fact that there are two sources of variation in sample-based estimates of IMRs: (1) sample size; and (2) variation of infant deaths. The approach is aimed at taking into account stochastic uncertainty while preserving the information concerning the uncertainty due to sampling. CSDE Affiliate Dr. Bo Zhao has been invited to present at the AI for Washington State conference, hosted by the Washington State Academy of Sciences. He will be joining a session alongside Mike Goodchild, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and Mari Ostendorf, Vice Provost at the University of Washington, to discuss how to build ‘responsible AI.’ The conference will feature several leading figures in AI from Washington State, including Microsoft Chief Scientist Eric Horvitz, State Senator Matt Boehnke, and key research leaders from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. CSDE’s very own Budget/Fiscal Analyst Parwati Martin recently competed in the National Physique Committee (NPC) North American Championships 2024 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on August 28-31. Parwati took 3rd place in her age-range Master Class! When you win 1st place you are granted a procard as part of the International Fitness and Bodybuilding Federation (IFBB), which is Parwati’s goal. She wants to train harder until next year’s competition, but will enjoy good food until then! Congratulations Parwati, CSDE is so proud of you! 

About the project: We are working on a project for the National Center on Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES), a principal statistical agency within the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). Our project aims to investigate how—and to what extent— various federal data assets like data files, tables, and tools are created and used in academic research, state program evaluations, data journalism, and other contexts. As part of this effort, we will be developing a prototype Data Usage Platform (DUP) to better understand the uses of federal data. The DUP will (1) search for references to federal datasets used in published research, articles, and other reports, (2) calculate usage statistics to help us better understand how—and to what extent—agency datasets are currently being leveraged, and (3) display this information through an interactive dashboard and other tools.

Request for input: The usability testing will be conducted by videoconference. The input you provide in this meeting will inform our decisions on a new Data Usage Platform solution. Participating in the usability testing will not require any preparation and we will ask you questions about the DUP platform wireframes that we will display. Your participation is voluntary, and you can decline to participate or to answer any questions. All information you provide will be kept confidential.  We will record the usability testing for note-taking purposes, if given your permission. These recordings will be deleted once the session has been fully transcribed. The usability testing would happen within the next few weeks, at a time convenient for your schedule.

The NYU Collaborative Center in Children’s Environmental Health Research and Translation (CEHRT) announced their fourth Pilot Project Request for Applications.

The goal of the Center is to translate existing knowledge to action on issues that affect children’s health. The themes of the Center are endocrine disruption and climate change, although we welcome proposals from other areas as well. The intent of the Center is to support the broader children’s environmental health (CEH) community — applications from NYU and outside institutions are encouraged. The Center will award developmental and translational grants, the former being smaller in size and extendable, and the latter focused on the translation of knowledge to action.

The IUSSP International Population Conference is the world’s largest international scientific conference on population issues. First organized in 1927 and held every four years since 1959, the conference brings together over 2,000 scientists, policymakers and practitioners from around the globe to present and discuss the latest research on contemporary population and development issues.

At the invitation of the Australian Population Association, the 30th International Population Conference (IPC2025) will take place in Brisbane, Australia at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (BCEC) from 13 to 18 July 2025. IPC 2025 will be an in-person conference. The Conference will include over 800 oral presentations and up to 1,000 posters selected from research submitted to the Call for Papers. There will also be plenary sessions, debates and invited panel discussions featuring leading experts in the field, as well as training workshops, exhibits and side meetings occurring both before and during the Conference.

The scientific program of the Conference will be created from abstracts submitted to the Call for Papers by the submission deadline of 15 September 2024. All abstracts must be submitted online via the IPC2025 website, which is scheduled to open for submissions on 1 May 2024. This program seeks to broaden opportunities for emerging researchers to engage with IES and conduct high-quality research related to learners with or at risk for disabilities. NCSER will provide financial support for advanced doctoral students­—under the guidance of a sponsor at their university—to conduct research in understudied areas related to learners, their families, practitioners, and policymakers.

Alp-Pop brings together scholars interested in population issues across several disciplines, including demography, economics, epidemiology, political science, sociology and psychology. The conference emphasizes empirical rigor and innovation over a given topic or geographical area, and meets the challenges of interdisciplinary and international
audiences.

Alp-Pop scholars confer both formally and informally. A traditional conference program (paper and poster presentations) mixes with group activities in a world-class winter resort. The French Institute of Mathematics for Planet Earth and the Social and Behavioral Data Science Centre of the University of Amsterdam will be hosting its second workshop on Bayesian Methods. This three-day workshop will take place at the University of Amsterdam, on October 16-18th of 2024. The event will gather statisticians, mathematicians and social scientists around the theme of Bayesian statistical methods for the social sciences. However, your college or unit may have different internal deadlines.  Notably, RRF funding priorities are to first, and foremost, advance new directions in research and to support faculty and researchers:
