There is no seminar this week in honor of the Veterans Day holiday
Next week, mark your calendars for our Applied Demographers Panel on November 18. Dr. Taylor Danielson and Dr. Deleena Patton will be speaking on the vital role of demographic data and analyses in their work at Washington State’s Department of Social and Health Services. Professor Jennie Romich will be moderating the discussion and this is an opportunity to understand better the challenges and opportunities for demographers and demographic data to contribute towards improving policy and population health and well being for Washington residents.

Arar and Fitzgerald New Book Published -The Refugee System: A Sociological Approach
CSDE Affiliate Rawan Arar and David Fitzgerald’s new book is out! The Refugee System: A Sociological Approach (published by Taylor and Francis) is a sweeping empirical and theoretical tour de force – drawing connections between systems-thinking in migration and demography, along with sociological perspectives on institutions. This is a project that’s been needed for at least a decade and Arar and Fitzgerald took up the challenge to great effect and impact.

CSDE Affiliate Crystal Hall gave the keynote address at the Big Difference BC Conference on Friday, November 4th where she spoke about her work around behavioral science and anti-racism. The focus of this year’s Big Difference BC conference is on how behavioral science can be deployed to have a positive, lasting impact across a wide range of topics and sectors in British Columbia. Freitag Receives Research Grant from Center for Financial Security at UW-Madison
CSDE Trainee Callie Freitag recently received a research grant from the Center for Financial Security (CFS) at UW-Madison, that supports her dissertation research and is connected to her participation in the Junior Scholar Intensive Training program at CFS last summer. The grant will support dissertation work examining how the employment histories and population characteristics of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipientsvary depending on when in the life course they first receive SSI.

Join Gates Foundation’s Data for Policy Conference (Registration Due 11/15/22)
On December 8 & 9, 2022, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will host the Data for Policy Conference. The deadline for registering for the conference is November 15,2022. The theme of the conference is “Ecosystems of innovation and virtual-physical interactions”, where the conference seeks to address how distinct geopolitical and virtual-physical ecosystems are emerging every day and important socio-economic decisions are increasingly outsourced to digital systems.

CSDE Co-Sponsors ’Sparking Climate Connections’ Lightning Talks with UW EarthLab (Due by Noon 11/17/22)
CSDE Affiliates are invited to sign up to give a brief talk about how their research connects relates to climate change at UW EarthLab’s December 1st event ‘Sparking Climate Connections: UW Lightning Talks on Climate Change’ . Lightning talk video presentations will be accepted on a rolling basis until noon on Thursday, November 17. The registration portal is the go-to place to submit a recorded lightning talk, sign up to view the lightning talks and RSVP to the in-person evening networking reception at the Douglas Forum at the Foster School of Business.

NIH Seeks Input For Planning a Workshop on Gender Affirming Care for Transgender and Gender-Diverse Populations (Due 11/18/22)
The NIH and the Sexual & Gender Minority Research Office (SMRO) has just published an RFI that seeks input from researchers and community members about research opportunities related to the four domains highlighted below. This input will serve as a valuable element in the development of a workshop and subsequent report, and the community’s time and consideration are highly appreciated.

The Harry Bridges Center Announces Building a Movement Labor Internship for Undergraduates (Applications Due by 12/2/22)
The Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies is proud to announce the third annual Building A Movement (BAM) Labor Internship for undergraduates. This paid internship program that connects undergraduate students at the University of Washington with the local labor movement. Students who are invested in labor and social justice advocacy are given the opportunity to explore how organizations work to make systemic and community-level changes for the benefit of working people. The ten-week program runs concurrently with winter quarter 2023.

2021 EarthLab Innovation Grant Program RFP (due 1/27/2022)
The Innovation Grants Program will invest in teams of community partners and academic researchers and students at the University of Washington (UW) who are interested in developing solutions at the intersection of climate change and social justice. Grants are meant to reflect EarthLab’s strategic vision, mission and priorities.
