Please join us for our CSDE seminar this week to hear about applied demography from the perspective of Washington state government researchers.

This week’s seminar features two external affiliates Dr. Taylor Danielson and Dr. Deleena Patton who practice applied demography via their work in the Research and Data Analysis (RDA) division at the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS).  RDA provides data, analytics, and decision support tools to DSHS in order to improve the delivery of services that meet DSHS’s mission of transforming lives.

CSDE Affiliates Ann Bostrom and Nicole Errett received a Population Health Initiative Tier-1 pilot grant for the project, “Unique risks of growing hazards: The influence of culture and marginalization on extreme heat health risks in Washington State.” With Co-PIs Cassandra Jean from the Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences’, Dan Abramson from the Department of Urban Design and Planning, and Jamie Donatuto from the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community, the project will investigate the unique exposure pathways and health impacts of extreme heat among different cultural groups, specifically Black, Latinx and tribal communities in Washington State.

CSDE Affiliate Anjum Hajat and colleagues recently guest edited a special issue of the International Journal of Environmental and Public Health titled, “Work, Health and Equity”. This special issue features 11 original research articles from a variety of disciplines where the authors over new insights on the role of work in creating health equity. Included in the special issue is a paper by CSDE Affiliates Peckham, Seixas, de Castro, and Hajat entitled “Do Different Patterns of Employment Quality Contribute to Gender Health Inequities in the U.S.?

CSDE Affiliate Katarina Guttmannova and co-authors recently published an article in Substance Use and Misuse entitled “Substance-specific risk factors amoung young adults: Potentioal prevention targets across cannabis-permissive environments“. The study utilizes data from the Community Youth Development Study (CYDS) collected in 2016 to examine levels of substance-specific risk factors such as perception of harm from substance use among young adults in a range of cannabis-permissive environments. The main objective was to inform future preventive interventions aimed at reducing cannabis use in the context of increasingly permissive environments.

CSDE External Affiliate Janelle Taylor recently published paper “Complexity and Challenges of the Clinical Diagnosis and Management of Long COVID“ in JAMA utilizes qualitative analysis on a sample of 200 participants who previously reported a positive test result for COVID. The authors describe dominant themes pertaining to the clinical diagnosis and management of long COVID such as clinical uncertainty. This work will help continue informing the conversation surrounding long COVID diagnoses.

On Thursday, November 17, from 12:00PM-2:00PM, CSDE presents the first of a year-long series of CSDE Workshops on Bayesian statistics. This installment, called “Introduction to Bayesian Statistics: Likelihoods, Priors & Posteriors” will focus on the necessary probability and statistical background necessary to write down Bayesian models and calculate posteriors under conjugacy. We will *not* be analyzing data with any statistical software during this workshop. The workshop will take place in Hans Rosling Center 101. The Computational Demography Working Group will host Junhe Yang’s (Sociology) presentation “Political and Educational Dynamics in Religious Group’s Mask Noncompliance Under COVID-19” [For more details visit here]. This study investigates the mediation effect of conservative political ideology on the relationship between religiosity and the noncompliance of masks under COVID-19, and the moderated effect of education on the mediation relationship. Using nationally representative data from COVID-19 and Social Distancing Survey, a moderated mediation analysis is applied to examine the pathway from religiosity via political conservativeness to the noncompliance of masks,

The NIH and the Sexual & Gender Minority Research Office (SMRO) has just published an RFI that seeks input from researchers and community members about research opportunities related to the four domains highlighted below. This input will serve as a valuable element in the development of a workshop and subsequent report, and the community’s time and consideration are highly appreciated.
