Amazing Collaborations Yields Impactful Research Among CSDE Affiliates!

In a productive collaboration, CSDE Affiliates Heather Hill, Jennifer Otten, and Anjum Hajat recently published their article “Racial, ethnic, and gender differences in the association between higher state minimum wages and health and mental well-being in US adults with low educational attainment” in Social Science & Medicine. This paper utilizes a triple difference-in-difference strategy to evaluate the associations between minimum wage and obesity, hypertension, fair or poor general health, and moderate psychological distress in 25-64 year old adults with a high school education/GED or less.

New Study by Bekemeier Reveals Rural Health Data Challenges During Pandemic

CSDE Affiliate Betty Bekemeier’s latest article published in the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice: JPHMP,  “Rural Public Health Data Challenges During the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Case for Building Better Systems Ahead of a Public Health Crisis“, addresses the need for high-quality population data and the capacity to effectively use this data in the context of COVID-19. This paper explores Rural public health data challenges and provides recommendations for improving rural data access and capacity ahead of future crises by gathering qualitative data from rural public health personnel.

New Research from Rao Develops a Mathematical Model for Years in the U.S. Congress

Recent work published in Genus by CSDE External Affiliate Arni Rao, entitled “Congressional Symmetry: Years Remaining Mirror Years Served in the US House and Senate”, seeks to test and identify applications for a mathematical model to explore the members remaining years in Congress. This project utilizes more than two centuries of historical Congressional data and a stationary population identity model to approximate remaining years.

Berridge Publishes Two New Articles!

CSDE Affiliate Clara Berridge  published two first-authored articles recently that are of great interest for our community. Each piece examines how different technologies may help support vulnerable older adults. The first “Preliminary efficacy of Let’s Talk Tech: Technology use planning for dementia care dyads” was publsihed in Innovation in Aging, while the other “Companion robots to mitigate loneliness among older adults: Perceptions of benefit and possible deceptionwas released in Frontiers in Psychology.

CSDE Matching Support: Open for Applications

CSDE is available to provide matching in-kind or monetary support to accompany a submission to other on-campus funding mechanism, such as Earthlab, Population Health Initiative, Royalty Research FUnd, or Urban@UW

All projects inquiring about matching funds, must have a CSDE affiliate who is a UW faculty and will be listed as a PI or co-PI.

Note that we strongly suggest contacting either Development Core Director (Steven Goodreau) or CSDE Director (Sara Curran) to discuss possibilities for your specific proposal before submission.

CSDE Population Research Planning Grants (PRPGs): Open for Applications

Population Research Planning Grants (PRPGs) are designed to provide in-kind support and/or funds of up to $25k* to support a wide array of activity types throughout the development of a research project. As part of our mission to complement, rather than duplicate, other campus opportunities, we will consider funding many more small and large types of activities that will lead to research products (publications, grants, data access sites and data documentation, code repositories, etc.).

Apply for Summer Research Fellowship With the Center for Studies in Demography & Ecology (Due 3/28/23)

The Population Health Initiative is partnering with the University of Washington’s Center for Studies in Demography & Ecology for the fifth consecutive summer to offer the Population Health Applied Research Fellowship program. Applications for this summer’s cohort will be accepted until March 28, 2023 from undergraduate and graduate students across all UW schools and colleges on all three UW campuses.

This paid fellowship program will offer a multidisciplinary team of undergraduate and graduate students training in data analysis techniques as well as in research and presentation skills while they develop a work product for an external partner.

Course on Matrix Approaches to Modelling Kinship at MPIDR (3/17/2023)

The Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) will be offering an open course on Matrix Approaches to Modelling Kinship (3-12 May 2023) and encourages qualified candidates to apply. Instructors are Diego Alburez-Gutierrez, Hal Caswell and Ivan Williams.

This two-part course presents the theory underlying new matrix approaches to the formal demography of kinship networks. The first part of the course introduces the matrix formulation of demographic analyses, while the second part focuses on matrix kinship models that describe the development of the network of kin around a focal individual as it ages from birth.

NASEM to Host Public Workshop on Integrating the Human Sciences to Scale Societal Responses to Environmental Change (3/23 – 3/24/2023)

Join the National Academies Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM)  for Integrating the Human Sciences to Scale Societal Responses to Environmental Change: A Workshop to explore the potential for synthesizing the human sciences (e.g., social, behavioral, psychological, political, organizational) to develop critical societal capacities for and responses to climate change. The workshop will take place March 23-23th at 4:00 PM ET.

Gathering Collaborative & King County Announce $25m Grant Program to Address Racism is a Public Health Crisis (Due 3/26/2023)

The Gathering Collaborative along with King County government invites community and business partners across the region to join in continuing the critical work to undo the harms of systemic racism, which was declared a public health crisis by King County in 2020. Envisioned jointly by community members and King County in August 2021 and launched in March 2022, The Gathering Collaborative is a group of trusted community members who are involved to uplift Black and Indigenous people and their communities – those who are most directly harmed by racism.

Check out the 20th Annual Symposium from The Center for Family & Demographic Research on “The Rising Significance of Singlehood in the U.S.”. This symposium will feature three scholars who are on the cutting-edge of this emergent area of research. The symposium is free, but pre-registration is required and can be found here.

Request for Information (RFI): Future Directions in Violence Against Women Research (Due 3/31/2023)

This Request for Information (RFI) is intended to gather public input on priority scientific directions in violence against women (VAW) research. This includes cisgender, transgender, and gender-diverse persons who identify as a woman or girl, as well as other individuals assigned female at birth but who may not identify as a woman or girl. Specifically, the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), the Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH), the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)

Workshop Alert! ICPSR Panel Study of Income Dynamics (6/12 – 6/19/2023)

This five-day workshop will orient participants to the content and structure of the core PSID interview, its special topics modules, and its supplemental studies, including the Child Development Supplement (CDS), the Transition into Adulthood Supplement (TAS), and the 2013 Rosters and Transfers Module. In addition we will discuss topics including the recently-released genomics data collected from children and primary caregivers in CDS as well as new data files which explain family relationships and demographic characteristics over time.
