CSDE Seminar Series
Structural Racism and Health Stratification: A New Theory-Driven Empirical Approach

     When:  Friday, May 13, 2022 (12:30-1:30 PM PT)
     Where:  Hans Rosling Center Room 101 & Virtual on Zoom

This week we are excited to host Associate Professor of Sociology at Duke University, Tyson Brown! Dr. Brown will present research that overcomes the disconnect between the conceptualization and measurement of structural racism that has hindered our understanding of the relationship between structural racism and health.

After the seminar, we will facilitate a graduate student discussion with Dr. Brown. Students will have the opportunity to discuss research collaborations, professional development, academic publishing, and interdisciplinary research, among other topics.

New Research from Knox, Jones-Smith, and Colleagues Further Evaluates the Effects of Seattle’s Sweetened Beverage Tax

CSDE Affiliates Melissa Knox, Jessica Jones-Smith, and several co-authors recently published a new study of the Seattle sweetened beverage tax (SBT) in Preventative Medicine Reports. The study leverages a mixed-mode survey to adults in Seattle and comparison areas, pre- and 2-years post-tax, to evaluate the impact of the SBT on 1) tax support and 2) perceived tax impacts. The authors use a difference-in-differences approach to isolate the attitudinal response to the tax. (read more)


Hall and Colleagues Turn an Equity Lens on Behavioral Science for Conservation in New Publication

With co-authors Katherine Crosman, Ines Jurcevic, Carlin Van Holmes, and Edward Allison, CSDE Affiliate Crystal Hall recently published a perspective article in Conservation Letters. The authors examine the use of behavioral approaches in conservation efforts, emphasizing potential misapplications that may result from omitting equity and power considerations. Additionally, the article offers recommendations for centering equity when applying behavioral insights to conservation, including strategies for high-level agenda setters as well as conservation practitioners. New Multi-State Study on Sexual Violence Among College Athletes From Adhia & Co-Authors

CSDE Affiliate Avanti Adhia with co-authors Alice Ellyson and Emily Kroshus recently published new research in the Journal of Interpersonal Violence. The administrative context and close-knit bonds of college teams introduce opportunities and structures for responding to sexual violence (SV) and delivering uniquely tailored prevention programming, but there is limited research about formal reporting of SV among student-athletes. This study examines the prevalence of SV and SV reporting history and perceptions among a multi-state sample of undergraduate student-athletes. (read more)


Two New Publications from the Dog Aging Project Consortium & Co-Authors

The Dog Aging Project Consortium--a collection of academics including CSDE Affiliates Kyle Crowder, Daniel Promislow, and Science Lead Matt Dunbar producing an open-science project--recently published two new publications with a number of co-authors. The first article, published in The Journals of Gerontology, investigates the extent to which the age-activity relationship is associated with certain dog and owner characteristics. The second article, published in GeroScience, investigates associations between feeding frequency, cognitive function, and nine broad categories of health conditions. (read more)

Are you interested in using sensitive, confidential, or restricted data in your research? The UW Data Collaborative, housed here at CSDE, can provide the infrastructure necessary to work with innovative, but hard-to-access and highly sensitive data. Learn about the types of data the UWDC stores, including existing datasets, and how to access them at our CSDE Workshop: Data Storage & Usage with the UW Data Collaborative from UWDC Director Phil Hurvitz on Wednesday, May 18, 10:00am-11:30am.

The final workshop of the quarter will cover Observational Ethnographic Research: Online and Offline with Jessica Beyer on Thursday, June 2, 12:00-2:00 PM PT. (read more)

 

Mark Your Calendars: Final Seminar in the Center for Health Innovation & Policy Science Series on Homelessness

Join the UW Center for Health Innovation & Policy Science and CSDE for the fourth and final seminar in our series on homelessness. On May 18th Isaac Rivera, Sarah Elwood, and Victoria Lawson (UW Department of Geography) will present a talk titled “Portraits for Change: Homelessness and Refusal Politics.” This will be and hybrid event hosted in-person at the Allen Auditorium and available via Zoom. (read more)



CSDE-Sponsored, Student-Led Event: “Roe v Wade: Impact, Solution, and Empowerment”

This event is an opportunity for activists, organizations, and the greater community to come together and discuss what is at stake for Roe v Wade, and its place within the Reproductive justice movement. The event is sponsored by the UW Alene Moris Women's Center, as well as the Center for Studies in Demography & Ecology. Join us on Saturday, May 21st, 2022 at 10:00 am – 2:30 pm PST for a safe space of education, dialogue, and empowerment to provide actionable steps and resources to help advocate for reproductive rights.
