UW Data Collaborative (UWDC) Corner: Meet with Data Axle for Data Product Updates & Q&A

Join us for an informal discussion with Scott Lea, Data Axle’s representative, during his visit to the UW Seattle campus. Scott will share product updates and answer questions about Data Axle data and its research applications.

 

This session is open to UW faculty, researchers, staff, and students who currently use Data Axle data, are interested in exploring the data for future research projects, or would like to learn more about this research resource.

What is Data Axle?


Data Axle is a data and analytics company that maintains extensive business and consumer databases covering the United States. Through a partnership between UW Libraries and the Center for Studies in Demography & Ecology (CSDE), University of Washington researchers have access to historical Data Axle datasets.

 

The datasets include:

  • Business Data (1996-2025): Address-level information on U.S. businesses and other establishments, including industry classification, employment, sales, and location characteristics.
  • Consumer Data (2006-2025): Geo-referenced information on millions of U.S. households, including household demographic and consumer-related characteristics.

Organized as annual snapshots by state and year, these datasets enable researchers to examine demographic, economic, and community change over time and across geographic areas throughout the United States.

 

How Do I Access the Data?

 

Data Axle data are hosted and made available through the UW Data Collaborative (UWDC) Secure Data Enclave (dCollab). Access is available to UW researchers and is supported by UWDC staff.

In addition to providing secure access to Data Axle, UWDC can assist researchers with:

  • Identifying, acquiring, and accessing restricted-use research data
  • Secure, NIST SP 800-171-aligned data storage and computing environments through dCollab
  • Data use agreements, data sharing, and compliance support
