The first Evans School of Public Policy and Governance Research seminar of the year will feature CSDE affiliate Kristian Jones (Social Work) in which he will give a talk titled “What Happens in a Mentoring Intervention Intended to Prevent Firearm Violence?” The seminar will take place on Wednesday, Oct 7, from 11:30-12:30, in Parrington Hall 360. Congratulations Dr. Jones, and we hope that newsletter readers can join the CSDE and Evans communities for this exciting event!
Description: A promising intervention for mitigating firearm-related injuries and deaths is mentoring provided by individuals with specific lived experiences with firearm violence and trauma (e.g., credible messengers, violence interrupters) in community violence intervention (CVI) programs. This presentation will focus on research funded by UW’s ITHS KL2 program and present a preliminary framework developed through the use of a constructivist grounded theory methodology to capture the process that occurs in mentoring interventions in CVI programs aiming to prevent firearm violence in marginalized communities from the perspectives of mentors and administrators in CVI programs. Preliminary findings from interviews with young people will be presented as well.
