CSDE Affiliate Jeremy Hess (Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, Global Health, and Emergency Medicine) and external affiliate Kathryn McConnell (Sociology, University of British Columbia) contributed to a large-scale collaborative paper published in Earth’s Future, titled “Research Priorities for Robust Climate Assessments in the United States,” alongside more than 150 other researchers. Drawing on the expertise of scholars who contributed to the Sixth National Climate Assessment (NCA) and other national and sub-national climate assessment reports, the paper identifies advancing and emerging areas of climate science ready for assessment or near-term research. It highlights select U.S.-relevant topics where scientific advances since the 2023 Fifth NCA make new syntheses especially valuable, including the growing threat of compound extremes and cascading climate risks that can overwhelm systems built for independent events, and the need for continuous evaluation of climate response strategies alongside their broader economic, environmental, and health impacts. The paper aims to catalyze a coordinated network of climate assessments that can rapidly synthesize actionable science to inform climate-related decisions across sectors, regions, and levels of government in the United States. The full article can be found here. Congratulations Drs. Hess and McConnell!
