Program Director – Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences

The Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) at Stanford University stimulates cutting edge social science on important societal problems. A national and international resource founded in 1954, CASBS convenes collaborative teams of researchers and practitioners that cut across the disciplinary boundaries of the social and behavioral sciences (anthropology, economics, history, political science, psychology, and sociology) but also the humanities, education, linguistics, communications, and the biological, natural, health, and computer sciences. The Center has a distinguished history of fellowship support for individual scholars and research projects through its renowned single-year residency program and its convening of multi-year collaborative projects with dynamic teams that are both interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral. It attracts world-class academics, industry leaders, and policy makers and analysts from the public, nonprofit, and private sectors. CASBS is seeking a Program Director. As a member of the senior management team, the Program Director works closely with and reports to the Center Director.

This position is a two-year fixed term.

JOB PURPOSE
Work under the general direction of faculty and Center Director to develop, implement, and administer the vision, strategy, and goals of the assigned academic entity/program(s). Participate in entity/program strategy development, long-range planning, and partnership development.

CORE DUTIES*

  • Develop, implement, administer, and evaluate programs, including outreach to varied stakeholders by: conducting research activities within the program; analyzing data, creating reports, reviewing trends, and making program improvement recommendations. May develop or contribute to outreach strategy related to program communications, development, partnerships, and fundraising/funding. Participate in program strategy development, long-range planning and partnership development.
  • May teach and/or assist in the teaching and administration of courses. Create and/or advise in the development of curriculum. May advise students and/or coach/mentor clients. Organize educational and intellectual events and workshops for diverse audiences.
  • Write and/or edit complex content for proposals, research grants, peer-reviewed publications, and other program activities. Assist with grant writing and proposal development, including identifying and applying for event and program funding in consultation with development and other staff.
  • Contribute to and inform on strategic program/entity planning and related funding and financial sustainability. Identify opportunities and implement and administer scholarly programs and initiatives.
  • Coach and mentor program staff.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education & ExperienceBachelor’s degree and three or more years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience. Advanced degree may be required for some programs. For jobs with financial responsibilities, experience managing a budget and developing financial plans.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources.
  • Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
  • Ability to oversee and direct staff.
  • Basic knowledge of managing budgets and developing financial plans.

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Advanced degree in behavioral and social sciences.
  • A proven track record of grant-writing.
  • A self-starter, with the ability to work independently and as a member and leader of a team.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work and communicate effectively with a variety of academics, industry leaders, policy makers and analysts in connecting across behavioral and social science disciplines, and developing project ideas.
