Michelle O'Brien is a demographer and quantitative social scientist with substantial international experience. She is a Research Scientist in Family Planning at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
O’Brien’s research focuses on the long-term social and demographic consequences of war and violence. What is the legacy of war for reproductive health, educating girls, or neighborhood choices? Does nonwartime violence drive these social and demographic changes, as well?
O’Brien’s work examines these questions using computational methodology, statistical analyses, and field observations in cross-national perspective, as well as case studies like Tajikistan, Russia, Nepal, and Rwanda.
