Application Process

UW Visiting Scholars can also apply to become a CSDE Visiting Affiliate.

Submit the following when you apply:

  • Letter of interest
  • CV or NIH bio sketch
    • If you’re looking to create a bio sketch, we recommend using SciENV: Science Experts Network Curriculum Vitae: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sciencv/  . At this site you can create an NIH or NSF bio sketches and generate different versions for different projects.
  • Letters of Recommendation from Two CSDE Affiliates
    • Two (2) letters of recommendation are required. They should come from faculty or other professionals who are current CSDE Affiliates. If you don’t have someone in mind to write a support letter for you, please review our list of current Research Affiliates. CSDE affiliates are used to providing mentorship to junior faculty and would be happy to support you in your application process! If you need further assistance finding someone to write a letter for you, please contact CSDE Director, Sara Curran or CSDE Development Core Director, Anjum Hajat.

The letter of interest should address your interest in CSDE and qualifications for Visiting Scholar status.

Applications are taken on a continuous basis and reviewed on a quarterly basis. Decisions are typically made at the end of each academic quarter.

For International Visiting Scholars, your letter of inquiry and other materials will be used to generate an invitation letter to you from CSDE. You will be able to use this letter in your Visa application. International Visa processing may take an extended amount of time.

Fees for International Visiting Scholars

If Accepted, International Visiting Scholars will be responsible for the following Processing Fees paid to CSDE upon arrival to the U.S.

  • $519 visa request fee (DS-2019) to get a visa issued through the UW International Scholars Operations (ISO) office. This fee is per person per year, so dependents and longer sponsorships will cost more. The cost of this fee changes year-over-year, current rate is effective as of August 1, 2025.
    • $99 amendment fee. For revisions to DS-2019s for J-1 exchange visitors. The cost of this fee changes year-over-year, current rate is effective as of August 1, 2025.
  • $220 SEVIS fee (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System)
  • $185 nonimmigrant visa application processing fee 

Responsibilities

As research partners, Visiting Scholars are expected to actively support CSDE.

Visiting Scholars should

  • Acknowledge CSDE support on publications, conference papers, and posters that used core services in any way or included work with a CSDE Trainee, Affiliate, or Staff
  • Share their research (e.g., present at a CSDE Seminar) and its impact
  • Regularly attend CSDE events

Visiting Scholars are encouraged to

  • Propose events and invite outside expert population scientists to UW
  • Collaborate on population science projects with CSDE staff and Affiliates
