• Drawing on interviews, participant observation, and archival research, Natália’s dissertation examines how trans-led organizations in Brazil make violence against trans people legible. This particular chapter shows how activists strategically produce quantitative data in ways that challenge positivist assumptions about objectivity and neutrality in knowledge production. She interprets these practices through the sociological frameworks of legibility, data feminism, and standpoint epistemology.
• Natália Heringer is a doctoral candidate in Sociology at the University of North Texas. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Brazil, her research asks questions at the intersection of political sociology, epistemology, gender, and violence, with a particular focus on how social movements produce data to make violence against trans people legible and influence public policy and the law. Before beginning her Ph.D., she earned a master’s degree in Human and Social Sciences from the Université de Strasbourg, France, and worked at a Domestic Violence Court in Brazil.
