The Department of Sociology at the University of Maryland is seeking to fill a position of Lecturer. This person also will serve as Director of Undergraduate Studies. This is a full-time 12-month, non-tenured position, with promotion opportunities. Sociology is a popular undergraduate major at Maryland and we are committed to excellence in our undergraduate program — our faculty have been repeatedly recognized with teaching awards, including the BSOS Excellence in Teaching Award.

A PhD in Sociology and a minimum of 2 years experience teaching Sociology at the college level are required.  Preference will be given for prior experience in academic advising and curriculum development; evidence of innovation in teaching and developing interdisciplinary collaborations; knowledge of student learning outcomes assessments; and an understanding of the diverse needs of undergraduates.

The Director is responsible for administering the undergraduate office, leading the efforts to enhance and innovate undergraduate teaching, and working with other faculty to shape the undergraduate curriculum in preparation for future growth opportunities. In addition to administrative duties, the Director will teach undergraduate courses. The precise teaching load is negotiable with the Chair. Other duties involve working with faculty to help them become more effective teachers including developing and supporting efforts to use technology and other methods to innovate and evaluate teaching within the department.  The remaining duties of this position include supervision of undergraduate advising staff and ensuring prompt, courteous service to students, parents and the campus community. The position requires the ability to work with students, faculty, and administrators as well as excellent public speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills.

The University of Maryland is located in Prince Georges County, near Washington, DC, accessible from the College Park/UM Metro stop. For more information on the department and the university, we encourage interested persons to visit our website at www.socy.umd.edu.
