Since 2010, CSDE resells SAS Education Analytical Suite (EAS) server licenses for 64-bit Windows Server and Linux systems. UW academic/research units can purchase these SAS license units from CSDE via a UW Budget Number. The license period is July 1st to June 30th ( 7/1 – 6/30 ), and licenses are sold in 12-month increments only.
CSDE offers the “Cadillac” version of SAS Server (not workstation) to support its researchers’ steep compute and memory requirements, but there are also some free SAS options to explore. They have limitations in CPU and feature sets, however, and they might not be suited for your work—pay close attention to features when choosing an edition. More information about editions and features may be found here. Note that CSDE does not actively support free SAS options.
EAS SAS Server licenses are available ONLY on these platforms: (*NO* desktop windows OS’s are supported)
- Windows Server 2025, Windows Server 2022 – x64 only
- Linux x64 – note that a Linux license is always a “server” license; there is no “desktop Linux” available from SAS)
- Supported Linux distros are 64-bit only and at last check, include Redhat, Centos, Debian, and Ubuntu – Please confirm at the SAS website the most up to date SAS server 9.4 installation requirements
- SAS server can be used on the UW Hyak High performance cluster on a single node matching the number of CPU sockets you paid for. Please choose a Linux license in the request form and note Hyak use in the comments.
As of 8/2025, for non-UW entities (external billing) CSDE must include an overhead surcharge of 15.6% on SAS server payments. UW internal billing does not require this surcharge.
SAS license fees when used on multi-user server machines*:
CPU sockets Price 1 $1500 2 $2800 4 $4800

* NOTE: SAS Institute license charges by CPU sockets (not CPU cores) You must buy the license for the exact # of sockets in your system
For example, the price for SAS Server on a 2-socket server (2 SAS workunits, regardless of how many cpu cores per socket) would cost a UW entity $2800 per year (billed to your UW budget number). Please use the Linux command: “lscpu | grep -i socket” to determine the # of CPU sockets. Our license period is yearly, from July 1 to June 30.
