Introduction to tidycensus
Instructor: Kyle Walker
Introduction to the R package for accessing and making estimates with Census/ACS data tidycensus by package author Kyle Walker.
Data from the United States Census Bureau are used by practitioners across a wide range of professional fields. This workshop will introduce participants to the tidycensus R package for working with US Census Bureau data. Participants will learn how to download data from the decennial US Census and American Community Survey; analyze Census data with popular tidyverse tools; and visualize Census data with both charts and maps. |
Anyone with an interest in Census data is welcome; a familiarity with R is helpful but not required.
Prerequisites |
Participants who want to run examples on their own computers should install R and RStudio along with the tidyverse and tidycensus packages. Ideally they will also register for a Census API key following the instructions at https://walker-data.com/census-r/an-introduction-to-tidycensus.html#getting-started-with-tidycensus. Kyle’s book, available at https://walker-data.com/census-r/, is helpful reading beforehand. |
