Otten and Spiker Featured in Tri-City Herald Article on Interfaith Partnership Working Together to Feed Tri-City Families

Posted: 8/6/2026 ()

CSDE Affiliates Marie Spiker (Epidemiology) and Jennifer Otten (DEOHS) were recently featured in a Tri-City Herald article titled, “Interfaith partnership helps feed Tri-City families.” In response to inflation and SNAP cuts driving record food insecurity, three Tri-City religious organizations have partnered together to help thousands of local families. The article mentions the importance of state-level data collection amidst the loss of national food security survey data. The Washington State Food Security Survey team, led by UW researchers Otten and Spiker and funded by the Washington State Department of Agriculture, conducted a sixth wave of the WAFOOD survey in March and April of 2026 to get a clearer picture of how WA households are dealing with food insecurity.
